La banda noruega Circus Maximus está en el punto de mira por su inminente lanzamiento de su cuarto álbum y harán una gira mundial haciendo parada en España. Hemos contactado Michael Eriksen para saber más sobre su próximo disco y sobre la gira.

MS: Muchas gracias por contestar a nuestras preguntas. Circus Maximus ha evolucionado desde su primer álbum en 2005. Su música se ha vuelto más melódica, quizás algo más comercial, pero siempre manteniendo su espíritu progresivo. Isolate era un buen disco, pero el álbum de 2002 Nine era una joya. Creo que fue el mejor disco del año. ¿Cómo veis vosotros mismos la evolución de la banda?
Primero de todo, muchísimas gracias por vuestras amables palabras. Siempre hemos sido muy de melodías y siempre lo seremos. Tu mezclas una buena melodía con un riff fresco y ya tienes Circus Maximus 😉 Creo que podríamos concluir los 4 álbumes diciendo:
The 1st Chapter = álbum debut, vamos a probar todo tipo de cosas.
Isolate = Tratemos de hacer un álbum conceptual mientras estamos en ello.
Nine = Canciones pegadizas y que van directamente al grano.
Havoc = El lado oscuro de Nine.
MS: El próximo 18 de Marzo saldrá a la luz vuestro cuarto álbum, Havoc. ¿Qué podríais decirnos sobre él?
Tiene un enfoque más oscuro con respecto a nuestros discos anteriores. Le da una cierta sacudida al sonido y el oyente recibe una bofetada en la cara con toda seguridad 😉
Para este hemos creado la música que nos gusta tocar. Quién sabe si tal vez el próximo álbum será aún más duro o más blando llegado el caso…
MS: Si escuchas el single ‘The Weight’ parece que seguís el mismo camino que Nine. ¿Qué es lo que hay de nuevo en Havoc?
En los discos anteriores hice muchas capas de voces y doblajes, mientras que en Havoc va todo en una misma línea de cada canción, no hay doblajes. Todos los coros los hacen Mats y Truls y esto tiene un efecto genial en el sonido cuando se trata de los coros. Me encanta.
MS: ¿Puedes decirnos cómo fue el proceso compositivo?
El álbum fue escrito más o menos todo por Mats Haugen. Esto fue decidido por el resto de la banda desde el principio del proceso. Glenn y Truls también contribuyeron con letras como de costumbre, y fue luego en el estudio cuando todos juntos aportamos y aunamos nuestras ideas para conseguir darle el toque final, el toque Circus Maximus.
MS: He leído que el lanzamiento también ofrece una edición especial con algún contenido extra. ¿Qué es lo que incluye?
Tiene un bonus-track, una nueva canción llamada ‘Loath’ y hay varios temas en directo que fueron grabados mientras estábamos en Japón hace unos años. Fue grabado ante 15.000 fans japoneses gritando… eso no tiene precio…
MS: Siempre me ha sorprendido el parón entre vuestros álbumes: 2005 – 2007 – 2012 y ahora 2016. Cuatro lanzamientos en 11 años. ¿Hay alguna razón por la cual os tomáis tanto tiempo para cada álbum?
Jaja, bueno cada lanzamiento tiene su promoción completa, por eso cuando lanzamos un álbum pasamos los siguientes 2 años promoviéndolo para luego después empezar otra vez a escribir nuevas canciones, más o menos. Nos llevó uno o dos escribir y grabar este disco y de igual manera nos pasaremos el próximo año o algo más para promoverlo. Mats dijo durante el ensayo el otro día que él ya tenía ideas para nuevas canciones así que, comienza el juego!
MS: Michael solías participar más en los proyectos de Frontiers, ¿es ésta tal vez la razón por la cual os tomáis ese tiempo? Por cierto, ¿qué pasó con The Magnificent? ¿Continuareis editando/publicando álbumes?
Sí, The Magnificent se grabó hace unos años con algunos de los mejores músicos de Finlandia. Todos los que contribuyeron en ese álbum están actualmente ocupados con otros proyectos, por lo que cruzamos los dedos para poder editar un nuevo lanzamiento en algún momento en un futuro cercano. Me gustaría hacer más proyectos, pero siempre he de tener en cuenta que todos los demás proyectos que hago afectarían a la agenda de Circus Maximus. Dicho esto, estoy trabajando en un álbum con uno de los más grandes guitarristas que conozco… Manteneos atentos 😉
MS: Hablemos de la escena del metal progresivo noruego. Noruega siempre ha sido una tierra de grandes bandas y músicos como Conception, Jorn Lande, Gazpacho, Wig Wam, Pagans Mind… Además, durante estos últimos años han surgido en tu país muy buenas bandas, al igual que Leprous o Rendez Vous Point. Tú que llevas en esto alrededor de 16 años, ¿cómo ves la escena del metal progresivo en Noruega?
Sinceramente, no presto demasiada atención a la escena, aunque hicimos dos shows con Rendevouz Point hace como un par de semanas atrás y tío, ellos patean culos! Ellos tienen su propio sonido y si eres un fan del metal progresivo tienes que prestarles atención con total seguridad.
MS: Vuestra última visita a España fue en 2008 junto con Symphony X y Dreamscape. Ahora, 8 años después venís como cabezas y haréis dos fechas, el 15 de marzo en Barcelona y el 16 en marzo de Madrid. ¿Qué es lo que vamos a ver? ¿Tocaréis muchas canciones de Havoc teniendo en cuenta el poco tiempo entre el lanzamiento del álbum, que es tan sólo unos días antes, de los conciertos?
Sí, vamos a promover nuestra nueva música tanto como podamos, pero sí ofreceremos un show con música de todos los discos de Circus Maximus. ¡No puedo creer que hayan pasado 8 años! Tío, el tiempo vuela ;(
MS: Aparte de España, visitaréis algunos países más. ¿A dónde iréis?
Vamos a ir a Italia, Alemania, Suiza y Holanda. Tenemos la intención de hacer una gira más grande en el otoño de 2016, por lo que esperamos que muchos de nuestros fans españoles se convenzan con nuestro espectáculo. Cuanta más gente aparezca, mayor es la posibilidad de hacer un nuevo espectáculo a finales de este año…

Thank you very much for answering our questions. Circus Maximus has evolved since its first album in 2005. Your music has become more melodic, kind of more commercial, but always keeping your progressive spirit. Isolate was a good album, but 2002’s album Nine was a gem. I think that it was the best album of the year. How do you see yourselves the evolution of the band?
First of all, thank you so much for the kind words. We have always been about melodies and we always will be. Mix a good melody with a cool riff and you have Circus Maximus 😉 I think we can wrap up the 4 albums by saying:
The I`st Chapter = Debut album, let`s try all kinds of things.
Isolate = Let`s try making a concept album while we`re at it.
NINE = Catchy songs straight to the point.
Havoc = The dark side of NINE.
Next March 18th your fourth album Havoc will be released. What could you tell us about it?
It has a more dark approach then on our previous albums. It has a crunchy sound to it and the listener gets a slap in tha face for sure 😉
We`ve created the music that we enjoy playing. Who knows, maybe next album will be even harder or softer for that matter.
If you listen to the single The Weight it seems that you follow the path of Nine. What is new on Havoc?
On the previous albums I did many layers of vocals and dubs, while as on Havoc I did ONE line through each song, no dubs. All the choirs are done by Mats and Truls, so this has a cool effect on the sound when it comes to the choirs. I love it.
Can you tell us how the compositional process worked?
The album was written more or less by Mats Haugen. This was decided by the rest of us early on in the process. Glen and Truls also contributed with lyrics as usual and when in the studio we of course came up with ideas all together to get the final Circus Maximus touch to it.
I have read that the release also offers a special edition with some bonus. What does it include?
It has a bonus-track, a new song called “Loath” and there are several live songs which was recorded while we were in Japan a few years back. It was recorded in front of 15 000 screaming Japanese fans, have to love that.
It has always surprised me the gap between your albums. 2005-2007-2012 and now 2016. Four releases in 11 years. Is there any reason why you take so many time for every album?
Haha, well every release has its promotion-round, so when an album is released you spend the next 2 years promoting it and THEN you start writing new songs more or less. It took 1-2 years to write and record this album and we`ll spend the next year or so to promote it. Mats said during the rehearsal the other day that he already had ideas for new songs, so game on!
Michael used to participate more in Frontiers’ projects, is this maybe the reason why you took that time? By the way, what happened with The magnificent project? Will you continue editing/publishing albums?
Yeah, I released “The Magnificent” with some of Finlands best musicians a few years back. Everyone who contributed on that album is busy with other projects, so let`s keep our fingers crossed for a new release sometime in the near future. I would love to do more projects, but I always have to have in mind that every other project I do effects Circus Maximus schedule. With that said, I am working on an album with one of the greatest guitar players I know. Stay tuned;)
Let’s talk about the Norwegian progressive metal scene. Norway has always been a land of great bands and musicians like Conception, Jorn Lande, Gazpacho, Wig Wan, Pagans Mind… Besides, those last years very good bands have arisen in your country, like Leprous or Rendez vous Point. You have been around for 16 years; how do you see the Norwegian prog metal scene?
I honestly don`t pay too much attention to the scene, but yeah we did two shows with Rendevouz Point a few weeks back and man they slay ass!
They have their own sound and if you are a fan of progressive metal they are an act to check out for sure.
Your last visit to Spain was in 2008 along with Symphony X and Dreamscape. Now, 8 years later you visit us as headlinera and you’ll have two dates, March 15th in Barcelona and March 16th in Madrid. What we will see? Will you play many songs from Havoc since the release of the album it’s just few days before the concerts?
Yeah, we are going to promote the new music as much as we can, but yes expect a Circus Maximus show with music from all our albums. I can`t believe it has gone 8 years! Man, time flies ;(
Apart from Spain you visit some more countries. Where will you be?
We`re going to Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Holland. We plan to do a bigger tour in the fall 2016, so we hope many of our Spanish fans finds their way to the show. The more people showing up the bigger chance of a new show later this year.
