En uno de sus descansos mientras prepara su gira europea del año que viene, tenemos el lujo de que el multi-instrumentista Neal Morse nos hable sobre su último disco "Momentum". El devoto más progresivo de la escena nos habla como es trabajar con sus colegas Randy George y Mike Portnoy, como ve este álbum y que intenciones tiene su próxima gira, como las que hay por pasar por España en algún momento del 2013… esto es lo que nos cuenta. Neal, te descubrí en Spock´s Beard con el álbum “The Light” desde entonces he seguido tu trayectoria con mucho interés. Siempre me ha impresionado la fuente inagotable de creatividad que sale de tu mente, así como tu dominio y convencimiento a la hora de interpretar sea cual sea el instrumento que utilices. ¿Cómo lo haces?
¡Está en mí y tenía que salir! Bueno, de hecho es verdad. Está en mí el hacer estas cosas y siempre lo hago, creo. Sabes…, crecí con diferentes estilos de música: música clásica, jazz, pop y un poquito de otros tipos de música con muchos estilos. Pero creo que la verdadera inspiración del sentimiento real por la música, y la Verdadera Mágia de todo, viene de Dios. Pero mucha gente ya sabe eso. ¡Jaja!
Acabas de presentar tu nuevo álbum “Momentum” por el que aprovecho la oportunidad para felicitarte. Ciertamente me ha gustado y se aprecia frescura y novedad sin desviarte de tu estilo personal. ¿Como ha sido el proceso de grabación con esos dos grandes amigos, los señores Mike Portnoy y Randy George?
¡Fantástico! Trabajar con Mike y Randy es como volver a casa. Está bien, es confortable y seguro… No de una manera aburrida, sino como decir “Confío en ti”. Esos chicos son hiper-creativos y tienen grandes ideas, así que no tengo que preocuparme en si van a ser buenas o no. Y además ellos mismos producen, por lo tanto, me puedo relajar y fiar de que todo lo salga es bueno, ¡como siempre!
“Momentum” es un disco variado, dentro del progresivo que tan bien sabes dominar. En él encontramos canciones rockeras como “Momentum”, maravillas como “Thoughts Part. 5“ referencias a The Beatles en “Freak o el tema de larga duración “World without end” que contienen grandes momentos. ¿Cuál es tu visión personal a cerca de este disco y que sensaciones te deja?
Ahora que lo pienso, “Momentum”, es un disco de Progressive de buen rollo. Tiene menos de heavy que en mis otros discos. Así que hay cierta luminosidad en él, lo cual me gusta. Te puedes sumergir profundamente en él y escuchar todos los detalles… y así mola… pero también lo puedes oír mientras conduces o mantienes una conversación. No es tan intrusivo como algunos de mis otros trabajos, lo que es bueno en este momento.
Tras el lanzamiento de “Momentum” ¿Tienes pensado realizar alguna gira de presentación?. Si fuera así, ¿Pasaría por Europa y en concreto por España?
De hecho, ahora mismo estamos trabajando en ello. Tengo unas pocas peticiones provenientes de España y esperamos estar por allí en 2013. ¡Siii, nos encantaría ir y tocar para todos vosotros, en Europa! ¡Mi nuevo grupo es increíble, y con Mike Portnoy estamos encantados, como flotando por las nubes!
¿Cual es tu opinión personal y general a cerca de la evolución del rock progresivo hasta nuestros días y su proyección en el futuro?
No lo sé. No soy bueno prediciendo el futuro. ¡Soy terrible con los inventarios! Creo que el ordenador personal nunca volará porque, quién necesita una gigantesca calculadora en su casa. ¿Sabes a lo que me refiero? Pero espero que las cosas sigan yendo bien en el ámbito del rock progresivo y hay muchas más creatividad que está por venir. Veo aparecer a mucha gente joven y es muy alentador.¡Siempre que la música sea buena, no me importa qué tipo de estilo la llamemos!
Neal, ha sido un verdadero placer el poder entrevistarte, solo me queda decirte que te estamos esperando por nuestro país y pedirte que dirijas unas palabras a nuestros lectores y fans de España.

Neal, I knew about you in Spock’s Beard with the album “The Light”, from that moment on, I followed you with such an interest. I have always been impressed about your inexhaustible creativity, as well as your skills and conviction when singing, whatever the instrument you use. How do you do that?
It’s in me and it’s got to come out! Well, actually that’s true. It is just in me to do these things and always has I suppose. You know, I grew up on a lot of different styles of music: classical music, jazz , pop and a little bit of country, and so it just is natural for me to like to do a lot of different kinds of music with a lot of different styles. But I believe the true inspiration for real feeling in music, and the Real Magic of it all, comes from God. But most people know that already. Ha ha!
You have just presented your new album “Momentum”, so I take the time to congratulate you. I really liked it and something new and naturalness can be detected, without changing from your personal style. How was the making of the record with those two good friends, Mike Portnoy and Randy George?
Fantastic! Working with Mike and Randy is like coming home. It’s so nice and comfortable and safe …. Not in a boring kind of way, but in an "I trust you" kind of way. Those guys are so hyper creative and have such great ideas that I don’t need to worry about whether it’s going to come out good or not. And they pretty much produce themselves so I can just relax and trust that it’s all good to come out great, and it always does!
“Momentum” is a varied album, dealing with the progressive style which you really dominate. In this record we can find rock songs like “Momentum”, wonderful things like “Thoughts Part 5”, some references to The Beatles in “Freak” or the long-term song “World Without End” which contain great moments. What is your personal point of view about this album and how is the feeling about it?
I think it away, momentum, is a feel-good Prog album. It’s less heavy subject matter wise then many of my other albums. So there’s a certain lightness about it that I really like. You can really dive into it in a deep way and really listen to all the details… and it’s great that way… but you can also listen while you’re driving and having a conversation as well. It’s not quite as intrusive as some of my other albums that is cool for this time right now.
After the launch of “Momentum” Do you think about going on a launching tour? If so,would you come to Europe, specifically Spain?
Actually, we’re working on that right now. I have a few offers in Spain and we hope to be there in 2013. Yeah we’d love to come and play for you all in Europe! my new band is unbelievable and with Mike Portnoy it’s just through the roof!
What is your personal and general opinion about the evolution of progressive rock up to now and what about its future?
I don’t know. I’m never very good at predicting the future. I’m terrible with stocks! 🙂 I thought that the personal computer would never fly cuz who needs some big giant calculator in your house? Know what I mean? But I hope that things continue to go well in progressive rock music and there’s a lot more great creativity going on. I see a lot of great young people coming up and it’s very encouraging. As long as the music is good I don’t care what style we call it!
