Con motivo de su gira por Europa el próximo mes de Mayo junto a Metallica y Ghost, entrevistamos a Bokassa… Hablamos con Olav su batería, para que nos presente al grupo y nos cuente todo lo relacionado sobre la banda y como afrontan una gira de este calibre. Además en Junio estarán por Sevilla con su set completo y presentarse a más audiencia española. Esto es lo que nos cuenta…

M.S: Hola, bienvenidos a MS, quién nos habla?
B.: Hola! Soy Olav Dowkes y toco la batería y apoyo a las voces en la banda Bokassa.
M.S: Como es la primera vez que os entrevistamos en Metal Symphony, nos gustaría que os presentarais a nuestros lectores y nos contéis un poco cómo se forma el grupo, que estilo hacéis…etc…
B.: Bokassa se formó en 2013 en Trondheim por mí y el guitarrista y vocalista Jørn Kaarstad. El estilo de La música que tocamos ha sido definida como ‘Stoner Punk’, ya que es una mezcla de elementos tanto de punk rock como de hardcore, algo así como stoner rock/sludgemetal. Pero dicho esto, también hay una gran cantidad de thrash metal, groove metal y otros géneros ya que escuchamos mucha música diferente y nos inspiramos en muchas cosas diferentes.
M.S: Suponemos que es una oportunidad fantástica el hecho de tocar con Metallica y Ghost, ¿cómo estáis preparando esos conciertos? Cómo os dijeron que tocarais con ellos?
B.: Lars Ulrich de alguna manera descubrió nuestra música y nos pinchó en su programa de radio de la Apple Beats 1 llamado ‘It’s Electric’ en enero del año pasado. En ese programa siguió hablando de cuánto le gustaban nuestro álbum y nuestro video para la canción «No Control». Pensamos que esto era lo mejor que nos había pasado nunca y realmente no esperábamos que pasara nada más, pero en mayo nos envió un mensaje y nos preguntó si queríamos ir y saludarlos cuando Metallica tocaba en Oslo. Naturalmente aceptamos esta invitación y fuimos a conocerlos y a ver a Metallica en vivo. Aproximadamente dos meses después nuestro cantante Jørn recibió una llamada de la gerencia de Metallica, quien (después de tener que volver a llamar, porque les colgó pensando que eran vendedores por teléfono) preguntó si Bokassa estaría interesada en abrir para Metallica en su gira por estadios europeos en 2019.
M.S: Para quien os vea por primera vez en esa gira… ¿cómo es un concierto de bokassa?
B.: Realmente intentamos darlo todo en cada concierto, ya que la mayoría de nuestros conciertos son bastante cortos, intentamos encajar tantas canciones como podamos y no dejamos que ni un segundo se desperdicie. Se anima el moshing, los chistes desde el escenario son frecuentes, y tocamos a un volumen que no permite ni que la audiencia hablen unos con otros durante el concierto.
M.S: ¿Qué estáis haciendo ahora y que haréis después de la gira de Metallica?
B.: El fin de semana pasado tocamos en By:Larm en Oslo, Noruega. Y antes de eso hicimos diez fechas teloneando a la banda noruega Spidergawd por toda Noruega. Ahora tenemos algo de tiempo para prepararnos para la próxima gira de Metallica.
M.S: ¿Gira propia quizá?
B.: Actualmente estamos planeando una gira que se llevará a cabo a fines del otoño/invierno 2019.
M.S: No hemos visto nada respecto a ese nuevo disco que estaba anunciado para finales de 2018… Aún no ha salido? No tiene fecha de salida?
B.: Nuestro nuevo álbum se grabó el verano pasado y, lamentablemente, se ha pospuesto debido a una gran cantidad de diferentes razones. ¡Esperamos lanzarlo antes de que termine el verano!
M.S: ¿De momento estáis con Hellbilly handfishing, contentos con el resultado?
B.: Se editó también junto con otra canción «Only Gob Can Judge Me» en un vinilo de 7″, lo lanzamos en el verano de 2018 y estamos bastante felices con la cantidad de escuchas y reproducciones que ha tenido el tema.
M.S: Que os espera en este 2019? Entendemos que presentar ese disco, no?
B.: Si.

Hey! This is Olav Dowkes who plays drums and sings back-up vocals in the band Bokassa.
M.S: As it is the first time that we are interviewing you in Metal Symphony, we would want you to introduce yourself to our readers and tell us a little about how the group was formed,what style do you play… etc …
Bokassa was formed in 2013 in Trondheim by me and guitarist/singer Jørn Kaarstad. The style of music we play has been named as ‘Stoner Punk’ as it is a mix of elements from both punk rock and hardcore, as well as stoner rock/sludgemetal. But that being said, there is also a lot of thrash metal, groove metal and other genres in there, as we listen to a lot of different music and are inspired by a lot of different things.
M.S: We suppose that it’s a fantastic opportunity to play with Metallica and Ghost. How are you preparing those concerts? How did they ask you to play with them?
Lars Ulrich somehow discovered our music and played us on his Apple Beats 1 radio show called It’s Electric in January of last year. On that episode he kept talking about how much he liked our album and our video for the song “No Control”. We thought this was the coolest thing ever, and really didn’t expect anything more to happen from it, but in May he sent us a message and asked if we wanted to come and say hello when Metallica played in Oslo. Naturally we accepted this invitation and went to both meet him and see Metallica live. Roughly two months later our singer Jørn received a call from Metallica’s management, who (after having to call back a second time, because he hung up on them thinking they were telemarketers) asked if Bokassa would be interested in supporting Metallica on their European stadium tour in 2019.
M.S: For those who see you for the first time on that tour … what is a Bokassa concert like?
We really try to give it our all on every concert, as most of our concerts are rather short, we try to pack in as many songs as we can and not let a second go to waste. Moshing is encouraged, jokes from the stage are frequent, and we play at a volume that doesn’t allow for the audience to really talk to each other during the concert.
M.S: What are you doing now and what will you do after the Metallica tour?
Last weekend we played at By:Larm in Oslo Norway. And before that we did ten dates supporting Norwegian band Spidergawd all around Norway. Now we have some time to prepare for the upcoming Metallica tour.
M.S: Maybe your own tour?
We are currently planning a tour that is taking place late autumn/winter 2019.
M.S: We have not seen anything about that new album that was announced for late 2018 … Hasn´t it come out yet? Doesn´t it have a release date?
Our new album was recorded last summer and has unfortunately been postponed due to a lot of different reasons. We are looking into releasing it hopefully before summers end!
M.S: Are you currently with Hellbilly Handfishing, Are you happy with the result?
Not entirely sure what you mean here, but we did release it in the summer of 2018 and are quite happy with the amount of views and streams the song has gotten. It is also released along with another song “Only Gob Can Judge Me” on a 7” vinyl.
M.S: What awaits you in this 2019? We understand that releasing that record, don´t we?
