Desde Alemania con amor os traemos esta entrevista a Renatus Töpke, creador del libro para colorear "Wer malen will, muss metal sein" donde los más pequeños podrán pintar y enseñar a sus amigos a algunos de los músicos y bandas sin que sus padres se alarmen por la distorsión de las guitarras… Hablamos del lanzamiento y muchas más cosas sobre su empresa Töpkefilm, esto es lo que nos cuenta.

Muchas gracias por tu tiempo, es un placer para nosotros tenerte en Metal Symphony. ¿Qué tal estás?
"De nada hombre. Estoy muy bien, gracias."
Siempre hemos estado interesados en los proyectos relacionados con el rock o el metal, así que vimos tu libro para colorear y nos encantó. Por lo que hemos visto, no estás ni en el mundo de la enseñanza ni el editorial, así que cómo se te ocurrió la idea y cómo la llevaste a cabo?
"Jaja, la verdad es que no. No soy profesor ni nada de eso. Era el chico más tonto de mi clase… o casi. Tengo un hijo pequeño, Jonathan de cinco años, y cuando estamos en el parque a veces me susurra ‘Pon algo de música’. Le gustan cosas como AC/DC. En casa solo le está permitido escuchar música para niños, pero le gusta jugar con baquetas de batería en el sofá. Así que un día estaba tumbado en la cama y me vino a la cabeza: un libro para colorear relacionado con la música! Boom! Entonces le di algo de vueltas a la idea. Soy guionista desde hace 15 años y pensar y darle vueltas a las cosas es gran parte de mi trabajo, así que cada vez que le daba una vuelta nueva a la idea todo era más claro. En ese momento, me puse en contacto con tantas bandas, managements y sellos como pude y la mayoría de ellos estuvieron encantados con la idea. Encontré un buen compañero en Martin Hoffmann (quien también trabaja conmigo en dos cómics de zombies)y con los seis o siete primeros dibujos fuimos en busca de alguien que nos lo publicara."
Para qué edad está orientado el libro?
"El libro es realmente para niños de 3 ó 4 años en adelante o niños un poco más mayores. Y cuando me refiero a ‘niños mayores’ me refiero a adultos a quienes guste la buena música o padres con niños. Les puedes enseñar a los niños sobre esta música sin tener que ponerles los ruidos a toda pastilla en los oídos. Yo soy también un niño grande, así que es genial. Como padre compraría este libro para mi hijo, y no lo digo por decir."
Dónde se puede conseguir el libro ahora mismo?
El libro está publicado por Reiffer Verlag y se puede conseguir en Amazon o en la web de la editorial. También la puedes conseguir por el que te proporciona la mercancia… de lectura me refiero."
Hay muchas bandas que se han quedado fuera del libro. Tienes en mente una segunda edición?
"De hecho, ya estamos trabajando en un segundo libro. Y sé a qué te refieres cuando dices que hay bandas que ‘se han quedado fuera’. El problema es que hay bandas que tienen problemas con dar cosas gratis. Vendemos este libro por 5 euros, lo cual me parece muy barato. No, ‘barato’ no es la palabra correcta, diría que no es caro. Todo el mundo debería poder comprar uno. No podemos pagar a ningún artista ni sello por uso de su arte o logo. Así que algunas bandas dijeron ‘La idea está muy bien, pero no gracias’ así que es cosa suya. Sin rencores. Otras bandas como Maiden o Metallica ni siquiera contestaron, así que tenemos que vivir con ello. Pero prometo que en el segundo libro tendremos grandes bandas y portadas de culto de nuevo."
Imagina por un segundo que las ventas del libro se disparan y tienes que trabajar en otro libro. Sobre qué trataría?
"En este momento estoy trabajando en novelas gráficas y cómics. Me encanta el género zombie así que algún del material que hago trata sobre eso. Uno de ellos se titula ‘Deadliner’ y otro ‘Alone Among Zombies’. El primero lo editaré yo mismo en formato digital, pero ya tengo editorial para el segundo y saldrá el año que viene. Tengo ideas para un par más de libros para colorear y estoy trabajando con dos artistas. Además estoy escribiendo un relato sobre una banda de black metal que se ve atacada por demonios durante un concierto. Como ya he dicho, soy guionista, pero algunas de mis ideas no encuentran financiación en Alemania, así que necesito otra manera de contar mis historias."
Crees que el libro se podría incluir en el programa de las escuelas para que los niños se acostumbren a las bandas y su música?
"Esa es una gran idea, pero creo que los padres típicos no están preparados para ello… todavía. Es demasiado específico. El 90% de los padres quieren que sus hijos dibujen unicornios, árboles y camiones de bomberos. Pero me encantaría ver a niños en su clase coloreando nuestro libro mientras escuchan a Accept o Raven. Imagínatelo; guitarras y baterías a toda pastilla en clase!"
También produces y diriges videos musicales, y el último en el que has trabajado es para la banda Xandria. Te gusta el resultado final? Cuánto tiempo llevas trabajando en ese campo?
"Aún no hemos terminado ese video, pero rodamos escenas geniales con Dianne y la banda. Creo que acabaremos el video en Noviembre. Llevo trabajando en el mundo audiovisual desde 2001 como guionista y tras la cámara. Desde 2010 produzco anuncios y videos musicales. Me encanta mi trabajo, pero es duro sobrevivir."
Crees que hay demasiadas cosas relacionadas con la tecnología? Me refiero q ue puedes ver los videos en tu móvil o una tablet, y los niños pueden hacer puzzles en una tablet, por ejemplo. Qué opinas de ello?
"Esa es una buena pregunta. Es genial poder ver una peli en un viaje de tren largo y la teconología ayuda en muchos apsectos. Rceuerda: cuando yo era un crio escuchaba a mis compañeros comentar la película ‘Posesión Infernal’. Si tenías suerte podías consegur una copia de una copia taiwanesa subtitulada. Hoy la puedes conseguir con Amazon Premium en HD o algo por el estilo! Incluso en Youtube. Vi ‘Posesión Infernal’ en Youtube sin censurar! Al lado de ‘Faces of Death’ o pelis porno. Dios, es increíble cómo han cambiado los tiempos, jajaja
"Para los niños, sin embargo, es algo muy distinto. Como padre debes actuar de manera responsable, muy responsable. El límite es muy delgado. Como padre no quiero que mi hijo esté todo el tiempo viendo a un youtuber haciendo y diciendo chorradas. Quizá un libro para colorear real te da la posibilidad de hacer algo en el mundo real. Jajajaja, me lo he llevado bien a mi terreno!"

Thank you for your time, it is a pleasure having you around, in our website. How are you?
You are very welcome. I’m fine, thanks.
We have always been very interested in any rock/metal related projects, so we saw your coloring book and loved it. From what we have seen, you are not into the world of teaching nor the publishing world, so how did you come up with the idea and how did you do it?
Ha, no. I’m not a teachter or something. I was the dumbest kid in school… almost. I have a little son (Jonathan, 5 years) and when we are on the playground he often whispers ‘turn on some music’. He likes stuff like AC/DC. At home he is only allowed to listen to usual childrens music. And he likes to play with drum sticks on the couch. So I was laying awake in my bed when it just came to my mind: a music related coloring book! Boom. Than I rethink and rethink the idea. I’m a screenwriter since 15 years and rethinking is a big part of the deal So with every rethinking it came clearer and clearer.
Than I get in touch with as many bands, managements and labels as I could. And most of the really liked the idea. I found in Martin Hoffmann a partner (who is also working with me on two Zombie Comic Books) and with the first 6 or 7 drawings we went on search for a publisher.
What ages will the book be oriented?
The book is for real kids (3 or 4 and up) and big kids. And when I say ‘big kids’ I mean adults who like good music or parents with kids. You can show kids the music you love without blasting their ears with loud noises. I am a big kid too and it is great. As a father I would buy this book for my son. And that is not a frase.
At the moment, where can we get it? Would you like it to be published by any publishig house?
We have a publisher already, the Reiffer Verlag. And you can get our book via Amazon and via the publishers homepage. You also can order it via your local dealer… Book dealer I mean.
Many bands have been left out. Are you thinking about a second edition?
We are already working on a second book. And I know what you mean about ‘many bands left out’. The problem is that some bands have issues with giving away copyrights for free. We sell this book for 5 Euro. That’s really cheap. No, ‘cheap’ is the wrong word: It isn’t expesive. Everybody should be able to buy one. We can’t pay any artist or label for using an artwork or a logo. So some bands or managements just said “Solid idea but thanks, no.” Its up to them. No hard feelings. Other bands like Maiden or Metallica just didn’t answer so we have to live with it. But I promise in book 2 we will have great bands and cult covers again.
Imagine for a second that sales increase and you think about or you are requested to write another book. What would it be about?
I’m working right now on some graphic novels and comics. I love the zombie genre so some stuff handle with this topic. DEADLINER is the name of one of them, ALONE AMONG ZOMBIES another one. The first one will be self published digitally, for the second one we already found a publisher and it will be out next year. I have ideas for two other coloring books I am working on with two artists. So I’m writing a short story about a black metal band getting attacked by demons whilst a concert. Like I said I’m a screenwriter, but some ideas you can’t get financed in Germany so I have to find another way to tell my stories.
Do you think it should be included in schools so that children get used to the bands and their music?
This is a great idea. But I think the ordinary parents are not ready for this – yet. It’s too specific. 90% want their children to draw unicorns, trees and firetrucks. But I really would like to see kids in class coloring our book while listening to Accept or Raven. Imagine this; out of every classroom drums and guitars roar!
You also produce and direct music videos, and the last one that you have filmed is for the band Xandria. Do you like the final result? How many years have you been working in that field?
We are no done with the musicvideo yet, but we shot some great scenes with Dianne and the band. I think we are done at the end of november. I’m working in film business since 2001 as a writer and behind the camera. Since 2010 I produce commercials and musicvideos. I really like my work, but it is tough to survive.
Do you think that almost everything is related to the world of technology? I mean, you can watch videos on a mobile device or on a tablet, and children can actualy play puzzles on a tablet. What do you think about it?
This is a good question. It is great to watch a film when you are on a long train journey and technology helps you in many ways. Remember: When I was a kid I heard my classmates whispering about The Evil Dead. And when you had luck you get a copy of a copy of a copy of an thaiwanese subtiteled copy. Today you can get it on Amazon Prime in full HD or something! Or on youtube. I saw Evil Dead on youtube. Uncut! Next to Faces of Death. Or porn movies… Oh my gosh! Times have changed so much! Haha.
But for children it ist another thing. As a parent you have to act responsibly, very responsibly. The path is thin. I don’t want a kid which is the whole time on the internet watching stupid youtuber doing idiot things. So maybe a real coloring book will give you the possibility to do something in the real world. Ha, nice bridge.
