M.S: Hola Jeff, es un placer que estés en nuestra página , esperamos que estés bien. Hemos perdido la cuenta de cuántos discos has grabado en toda tu carrera… ¿Qué sientes cuando entras en un estudio de grabación y comienzas una sesión de grabación?
Jaja, yo también he perdido la cuenta, es deprimente ir y contar porque mi cuenta bancaria no refleja la cantidad de trabajo que he realizado en 3,5 décadas. Pero esto también prueba que no hago música por dinero, por supuesto que me gano la vida, pero la música para mí es como respirar. Cuando comenzamos un nuevo álbum, no tengo ningún ritual o pensamiento. Empiezo con el proceso de una canción a la vez, me concentro en las cosas hasta que me siento satisfecho de seguir adelante. Odio comenzar algo a continuación mientras que otra no está terminada.
M.S: ¿Qué explicas en las canciones de Wide Awake (in my dreamland) ?
La mayor parte de lo que escribo es en doble sentido, mis letras pueden ser sobre algo, pero la mayoría de los oyentes asumen que son sobre otro. Entonces, en Wide Awake, la mayoría de las letras tratan sobre cómo es el mundo hoy, especialmente aquí en los EE. UU., Social, políticamente, dividido, enojado, racial, etc., están sucediendo tantas cosas que se siente como si fuera un sueño todavía. estamos todos bien despiertos.
M.S: Nos sorprendió Fabrizio Sgattoni a la guitarra, con un gran nivel técnico y que nos recuerda en ciertos momentos a Malmsteen, ¿cómo lo conociste?
Todavía no he conocido a Fab, es un colega de mi productor, Alessandro. Ale quería trabajar con Fab durante muchos años y encontró en mi álbum el vehículo perfecto para hacerlo. Fab tiene TODOS los ingredientes de todos mis guitarristas favoritos, hay muchos momentos en los que casi me hace reír, en el buen sentido, porque es muy bueno y la risa viene de ‘Dios mío, no puedo creer lo bueno que es eso’. ! ‘.
M.S: Todos tus proyectos pasan por España, ¿qué recuerdas de los últimos shows que hiciste?
¡España para mí siempre es como volver a casa! Desde el primer show que hice allí en 2004 hasta el último que hice en 2019, tengo una sensación de emoción al cantar allí … ¡y los seguidores me devuelve la misma emoción! Mi último recuerdo fue un espectáculo que hicimos en Madrid donde el local nos dijo que estaban en un estricto orden de un nivel de decibelios muy bajo debido a los vecinos que vivían encima del local. El volumen era tan bajo que casi cancelo el concierto . Pero al final, una vez que la gente entró, todos dijeron que el sonido era genial y no tan bajo, ¡así que el concierto fue genial!
M.S: Entendemos que también habría una gira para presentar este nuevo álbum …
Incluso si quisiera, no, no hay forma debido a COVID. Pero tienes razón en que recientemente dije que no volveré a hacer giras como JSS o SOTO hasta que sepa que hay una mayor demanda para mí o a menos que yo lo sepa. He estado haciendo giras a menor escala durante muchos años y, aunque me encanta hacer giras y cantar para la gente, no puedo pasar meses fuera de casa para volver a casa con menos dinero que si me quedara en casa. Es muy caro hacer una gira y la mayoría no se da cuenta de que, a menos que juegues por miles cada noche, es difícil ganar suficiente dinero para las facturas básicas. Tengo que ser más inteligente los próximos años, ya que no quiero matar mi voz saliendo y haciendo muchos programas solo para pagar las facturas.
M.S: Apareciste en el streaming de la Trans-Siberian Orchestra, ¿qué es para ti un proyecto tan grande como el TSO en el que has estado participando durante tantos años?
Es algo muy importante del que ser parte porque me permite desafiarme musicalmente y canalizar cosas de otra naturaleza en lo que hago con mis propias bandas. TSO tiene un gran número de seguidores, pero esto no se debe a mí ni a ninguna persona de la banda, es grande debido a las historias y las canciones … oh sí, y el show en vivo es algo que nadie más ha hecho o puede hacer !
M.S: Por curiosidad, ¿tienes un método de aprendizaje para conocer todas las canciones que has grabado?
Absolutamente no, si he estado en más de 80 álbumes, eso son alrededor de 800 canciones… súmale todas las apariciones, coros y bandas sonoras, debe ser de miles.
M.S: No sé si has contado cuántas canciones conoces o cuántos discos has grabado, jaja …

M.S: Hi Jeff, it is a pleasure that you are on our site, we hope you are well. We have lost count of how many albums you have recorded in your entire career… What do you feel when you enter to a recording studio and begin a recording session?
Haha, I have lost count too, its depressing to go and count because my bank account doesnt reflect the amount of work I have done in 3.5 decades. But this also proves I am not doing music for money, of course I make a living but music for me is like breathing. When going into a new álbum, I dont have any rituals or thoughts. I start with the process of one song at a time, concéntrate on things until I feel satisfied to move on. I hate starting something next while another is unfinished.
M.S: What do you explain in your Wide Awake (in my dreamland) songs?
Most of how I write is in doublé entendre, my lyrics might be about something but most of the listeners assume they are about another. So on Wide Awake, most of the lyrics are about how the world is today, especially here in the USA, socially, politically, divided, anger, racial, etc., There is so much going on it feels as if its a dream yet we are all wide awake.
M.S: We were surprised by Fabrizio Sgattoni on guitar, with a great technical level and that he reminds us at certain moments of Malmsteen, how did you meet him?
I have still never met Fab, he is a colleague of my producer’s, Alessandro. Ale wanted to work with Fab for many years and found my álbum the perfect vehicle to do this with. Fab has ALL of the ingredients of all my favorite guitarists, there are many moments he makes me almost laugh, in a good way, because he’s so good and the giggle comes from ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe how good that is!’.
M.S: All your projects go through Spain, what do you remember from the last shows you did?
Spain for me is always like coming home! From the 1st show I did there in 2004 until the last I did in 2019, I get a sense of excitement to sing there…and the crowd gives me the same excitement back! My last memory was a show we did in Madrid where the venue told us they were on a strict order of a very low decibel level because of the neighbors who lived above the venue. The volume was so low, I almost cancelled the show. But in the end, once the people were in, everyone said the sound was great and it was not so low so the gig went great!
M.S: We understand that there would also be a tour to present this new album …
Even if I wanted to, no there is no way due to COVID. But you are right in that I have recently said I will not tour anymore as JSS or SOTO until or unless I know there is a bigger demand for me. I have been doing the smaller scale of touring for many years now and as much as I love touring and singing for people, I cannot spend months away from home to come home with less money than if I stayed home. It is very expensive to tour and most dont realice unless you’re playing for thousands every night, it is hard to make enough money for basic bills. I have to be smarter about the upcoming years as I dont want to kill my voice by going out and doing many shows just to pay bills.
M.S: You appeared on the Trans-Siberian Orchestra streaming, what is for you a project as huge as the TSO in which you have been participating for so many years?
It is a great thing to be part of because it allows me to challenge myself musically and cannel things of another nature into what I do with my own bands. TSO has a very large following but this is not because of me or any one person in the band, it is big because of the stories and the songs….oh yea, and the live show is something no one else has done or can do!
M.S: Out of curiosity, do you have a learning method to know all the songs that you have recorded?
Absolutely not, if I have been on over 80 albums, this alone is about 800 songs…add all the appearances, backing vocals and soundtracks, it must be in the thousands.
M.S: I don’t know if you have counted how many songs you know or how many albums you have recorded, haha ??…
Impossible to remember them all!
