En su carrera imparable e incansable, Spirit Adrift edita este “Enlightened in Eternity” via Century Media. Hablamos con su frontman Nate Garrett para que nos cuente todo sobre el disco, la situación de la banda y muchas más cosas en las siguientes declaraciones…

M.S:Hola, gracias por atendernos es un placer. ¿Cómo estáis?
El placer es mío. Estoy bien, intentando mantenerme tan ocupado y productivo como me es posible en medio de este año tan malo.
M.S: Para saber algo más de la banda decidnos como surgió la idea de formarla o que estilo tocáis…
El grupo empezó con dos canciones muy largas. Las grabé, tocando yo mismo todos los instrumentos. Grabé un disco completo del mismo modo. Un par de años después empezó la demanda de actuaciones en directo, así que junté un grupo para ello. Ahora la alineación para las grabaciones es Marcus Bryant a la batería y yo en a las voces y los instrumentos de cuerda. El sonido ha evolucionado desde el doom hacia un metal mucho más directo. Pero en verdad tengo una amplia variedad de influencias.
M.S: ¿De donde viene el nombre del grupo?
Quería un nombre que no fuera más de dos palabras y que sonara chulo. Mirando hacia mi colección de discos me llamó la atención la palabra “Spirit” (espíritu) y la palabra “Adrift” (a la deriva). Y ahí estaba el nombre que buscaba.
M.S.: Habéis lanzado vuestro último disco “Enlightened in Eternity”,¿Qué nos puedes decir sobre él?
Es definitivamente mi disco favorito de los que he hecho en mi vida. Partimos de la idea de hacer el típico disco de metal que inspirara y animara a la gente, y creo que lo hemos conseguido. Queremos honrar la tradición del heavy metal pero llevarlo hacia el futuro con nuestro propio sonido.
M.S: “Enlightened in Eternity” tiene una portada muy heavy , parece de una banda de power metal (Risas),¿Quién la hizo?
Se me ocurrió la idea y contacté con Adam Burke que fue quien lo pintó. Yo tengo el dibujo original colgado en mi pared y es mucho más impresionante en persona.
M.S: ¿Cómo fue el proceso de composición del álbum? ¿Cómo los anteriores?
Si, más o menos igual. Compongo y hago una demo de las canciones en casa. Solía tocar físicamente la batería y grabarla en las demos, pero ahora la programo. Luego le enseño las canciones a Marcus y retocamos las partes de batería juntos. Luego yo retoco las canciones en general hasta que me siento convencido de que están acabadas. Luego entramos al estudio y grabamos el disco.
M.S: Lo decimos porque muchos grupos en 4 años han escrito dos o tres discos, y vosotros tenéis 4 discos y 2 ep’s….. ¿Estáis contentos con el rendimiento de la banda?
Definitivamente. Este rendimiento tan alto no fue intencionado, y aún así ha surgido. Con lo que estoy más contento es que todo lo que hemos sacado tiene una calidad sustancial, y ponemos todo nuestro corazón, nuestra alma y nuestra energía en todo lo que hacemos. Muchos lanzamientos no significan nada si la calidad es una basura. Hay grupos que sacan muchos discos muy rápido, pero ninguno es realmente bueno. ¿Y de qué sirve entonces?
M.S: Crees que por el hecho de no haber conciertos por la pandemia, la gente está comprando más discos para escuchar en su casa? Quizá ayude a los ingresos de la banda…
Sólo puedo hablar por nuestra situación, pero sí. Este disco ya ha sobrepasado la venta de todos nuestros lanzamientos anteriores. Ha entrado en las listas de Alemania y EEUU. Hemos vendido más merchandising online que en cualquier otro año. Así que es difícil no poder salir de tour, pero en cuanto al momento que está pasando la banda, de momento todo nos va bastante bien.
M.S.: ¿Qué planes tenéis por hacer con el álbum? Un vídeo nuevo, video lyric, algún streaming quizá…
Hemos planeado unos 5 o 6 videos para este álbum y hicimos un directo por stream al día siguiente del lanzamiento. En cuanto a mis planes, tengo algunos eventos personales importantes en proceso que requerirán mi atención absoluta. Así que voy a desaparecer en el campo en Texas y ocuparme de ello. Regresaré cuando llegue el momento de volver a hacer tours.

M.S:Hello, thank you for answering our questions it’s a pleasure. How are you?
The pleasure is all mine. I’m doing ok, staying as busy and productive as possible in the midst of this shitty year.
M.S: To get to know the band a little more, tell us how the idea of creating the band , your musical style, etc…
The band started with two really long songs. I recorded them, playing every instrument myself. I made a full-length album the same way. A couple of years later there was demand for live performances, so I put a live band together. Now the recording lineup is Marcus Bryant on drums and me on all vocals and stringed instruments. The sound has evolved from doom to more of just a straightforward metal vibe. But I have a really wide variety of influences.
M.S: Where does the name of the band come from?
I wanted a name that was no more than two words that sounded cool. Looking through my record collection I took note of the word Spirit and the word Adrift. There was the name.
M.S.: You have just released your last album “Enlightened in Eternity”, what can you tell us about it?
It’s definitely my favorite album I’ve ever made in my life. We set out to make a classic type of metal album that inspires and uplifts people, and I believe we accomplished that. We want to honor the tradition of heavy metal but carry it into the future with our own sound.
M.S: “Enlightened in Eternity” cover is so fantastic and heavy, like a power metal band haha, who created it?
I came up with the idea and contacted Adam Burke, who painted it. I have the original painting on my wall and it looks even cooler in person.
M.S: How was the writing process for this album? Same as the previous ones?
Yeah pretty much the same. I write and demo all the songs at home. I used to physically play the drums and record those on the demos, but now I program the drums. Then I show the songs to Marcus and we tweak the drum parts together. Then I tweak the overall songs until I feel confident that they are finished. Then we enter the studio and record the album.
M.S: We comment on it because many groups in 4 years write two or three albums, and you have 4 albums and 2 eps … are you happy with the performance of the band?
Yes, definitely. This high output was not intentional, however. It’s just how it happened. The thing I am most happy with is that everything we put out has been of substantial quality, and we put all of our heart, soul, and energy into everything we do. Lots of output doesn’t mean anything if the quality is garbage. There are bands that will put out a bunch of albums really fast, but none of them are any good. What’s the point in that?
M.S: Do you think that because of not being able to go to concerts due to the pandemic, people are buying more albums to listen at home? We do not know if the income that the bands could have improved
I can only speak for our situation, but yes. This album has already outsold all our previous albums. It charted in Germany and in the US. We’ve sold more merchandise online than in any other year. So it’s hard for us personally to not be able to tour, but as far as the momentum of the band, things are great.
M.S.: Could you tell us what are your future plans about it? A new video, video lyric, some streaming set maybe…
We’ve put out something like 5 or 6 videos for this album, and we did a livestream the day after it came out. As far as my plans, I have some significant personal events coming up that will require my full attention. So I’m going to disappear into the Texas countryside and take care of that. I’ll return when it’s time to tour.
