A pocos días de la celebración del Barcelona Metal Fest, os traemos una entrevista con Sharon den Adel cantante de los holandeses Within Temptation. Hablamos sobre Hydra, el disco que estarán presentando en el festival, su nuevo rumbo musical adquirido, las Q Sessions, el trabajo con invitados, sus directos y muchas otras cosas en estas interesantes declaraciones… Sara J. Hola y gracias por vuestro tiempo. Han pasado varios meses y muchos conciertos desde que editasteis vuestro nuevo disco. ¿Cuál ha sido la reacción de los fans a las nuevas canciones, las cuales combinan vuestra progresión en el pasado con una nueva visión hacia el futuro?
"Hemos tenido muy buena reacción con el nuevo material. Especialmente con "Covered by Roses", "And we Run" y "Paradise", que se han convertido en favoritas. Ahora mismo no te podría decir si vamos a seguir en esta dirección o si, de nuevo, vamos a probar algo distinto. Aún es demasiado temprano para eso :)"
¿Qué me puedes decir del tipo de gente que acude a vuestros conciertos? ¿Crees que el hecho de que en ‘Hydra’ haya más predominancia de guitarras respecto a vuestros anteriores discos ha influido en algo?
"Este album es más heavy y directo en términos de sonido. Con cada disco ganamos y perdemos fans. Esta vez estamos más guitarreros así que el público tendrá más temas con los cuales hacer headbanging :). Y lo hacen :)"
Hemos leído que no volvéis a vuestro sonido sinfónico. ¿Es eso cierto? ¿Crees que habéis dejado atrás esa época?
"Nunca digas nunca, pero esta vez nos apeteció seguir un camino distinto con ‘Hydra’."
No os vamos a preguntar sobre el setlist que vais a tocar en el Barcelona Metal Fest, pero ¿pueden los fans esperar alguna sorpresa u os vais a basar en las nuevas canciones?
"Siempre hacemos una mezcla de canciones viejas y nuevas, y siempre incluimos un par de cambios en el set de festival a festival. Venid a vernos y veréis si hay sorpresas o no :)"
Antes de pasar a otros temas, me gustaría preguntaros sobre "Hydra". Para mucha gente, la colaboración con XZibit ha sido chocante y se podría decir algo parecido del tema grunge que cierra el disco. ¿Cómo o por qué tuvisteis la idea de grabar un disco que muestra tantas facetas musicales? Imagino que el título del disco tendrá que ver algo con ello también…
"’Hydra’ significa dos cosas. Primero, las letras tratan de afrontar tus miedos y aceptar tus demonios (NDT- en el sentido de ‘defectos’ o ‘problemas’) y segundo, la diversidad de estilos con los que jugamos en el disco. Así que sí, tienes razón :)"
‘The Q Sessions’ no distaba mucho del eclecticismo musical que también encontramos en ‘Hydra’. Es inevitable haceros esta pregunta puesto que está relacionada con nuestro país: ¿Por qué escogisteis a Enrique Iglesias?
"Era más fácil para nosotros hacer versiones de canciones pop y dance que intentar convertir canciones de rock en otro tipo de canción rock."
No sé si planeáis tocar en directo algunas de esas versiones, aunque lo habéis hecho algunas veces. Sin embargo, en este caso específico, ¿habéis considerado la posibilidad?
"Sí, y hemos tocado una o dos durante esta gira 🙂 Es refrescante para todo el mundo."
Y ahora giremos la mirada al futuro. ¿Vais a tratar de repetir la experiencia de trabajar con tantos artistas distintos en los siguientes trabajos?
"Quizá, pero aún es muy pronto para decirlo. Si se da la canción correcta para ello, es posible. Nos ha encantado trabjar con otra gente. ¡Ha sido divertido!"
En Julio vais a estar en Barcelona tocando. ¿También volveréis en otoño tocando con Delain, como en el resto de la gira? ¿Cuál es vuestra opinión sobre esa banda y la combinación que hacéis en el escenario para el público cada noche?
"No, no está en nuestros planes volver a tocar en una gira de clubs en Europa este año o con Delain. Son una gran banda y fue divertido, pero volvemos a nuestros respectivos caminos."

"No gracias, solo que ¡estamos ansiosos por desplegar ‘Hydra’ en Barcelona pronto! Esperamos veros a todos allí y paséis un buen rato con nosotros!"

Hello and thanks for your time. There have passed several months since the launching of your new album and many concerts. What has the fans’ reaction been to the new songs which combine your previous progression with a new look towards the future?
We had really good reactions on the new songs. Especially ‘ Covered by Rosés’ , ‘And We Run’ & ‘Paradise’ were favorites. I can’t say if we’re going to continue this direction or move to something different again. It still too early for that 🙂
What about the audience in your concerts? Do you think that it has influenced on something the fact that the guitars predominate much more in Hydra than in your previous albums?
This album has become heavier and a bit more direct sound wise. We win but also lose some fans with every album. This time it was more guitar oriented so for the audience, there was more to head bang to this time 🙂 and they did 🙂
We’ve read that you don’t return to your symphonic sound, is it true? Do you think that you have finished that era?
Never say never, but it felt better to go a different way with Hydra.
We aren’t going to ask you about the set-list that you’ll play in Barcelona Metal Fest, but can we expect/foresee some surprise or are you going to focus on the new songs?
We always make a mixture of old and new songs and there are always a couple of changes with every festival. Come and see if we have surprise for you 🙂
Before we move on to other issues, I’d like to ask you about Hydra. For many people, the collaboration of Xzibit has been shocking and something similar it could be said about the grunge tone that closes your album. How did you have the idea – or why- of recording a album that shows so many and different music facets? I guess the title is also related to your answer…
Hydra stands for two things 1st lyrics are about facing your fears and embrace your demons and 2nd it stands for the diversity of the styles we play with., so yes 🙂
The Q Sessions was not so far away from the eclecticism music tone of Hydra. It is inevitable to ask you this question because it is related to this country: why did you choose Enrique Iglesias?
It was easier to cover pop & dance songs instead of turning rock songs into another kind of rock song.
I don’t know if you are planned to play some of those versions – I think you have done it at other times – but regarding this specific case, have you considered the possibility?
Yes and we did play one or two during the tour 🙂 it refreshing everyone
And now let us look at the future. Are you going to repeat the experience to work with so different artists in next releases?
Maybe, but it’s too early to tell. If the right song comes along maybe. We liked working with other people it was great fun!
You will come in July to play at Barcelona. Also you will come to play in the fall with Delain, like all the tour? What is your opinion about the band and this combination on the stage for the audience every night ?
No we’re not planning To come back for clubs shows in EU this year or with Delain. They are a great band and it was fun but we’re going our separate ways again.
