La calidad que atesora este «Veil of imagination» ha hecho que Wilderun fichen por Century Media Records y lo reediten de nuevo. Hablamos con parte de la banda como son Dan, Joe y Evan para que nos presenten al grupo y como han vivido este paso a un sello como CM entre otras cosas. Esto es lo que nos cuentan.

M.S: Hola, gracias por vuestro tiempo … ¿Cómo estáis?
Joe: ¡Gracias por invitarnos! Todos están bien aquí. Mientras el mundo está lidiando con la situación del Covid-19, nosotros también intentamos seguir adelante con eso.
M.S:Para conocer un poco más al grupo, contadnos cómo surgió la idea de crear la banda, vuestro estilo musical, etc…
Evan: Originalmente, comenzamos la banda como un proyecto de «folk metal» mucho más sencillo. Estaba escuchando mucho de la escena del folk metal europeo en ese momento, y quería intentar darle una especie de giro americano a ese sonido. Eso es esencialmente lo que fue nuestro debut «Olden Tales». Después de ese disco, nos dimos cuenta de que no queríamos necesariamente que toda una carrera girara en torno a esa idea, veíamos que era una idea limitada, por lo que comenzamos a expandirnos hacia territorios de composición más dinámicos. Gran parte del folklore y la epopeya del primer disco aún sigue a día de hoy, pero creo que de una manera más extensa e interesante.
M.S:¿De dónde viene el nombre de la banda?
Joe: El nombre de la banda proviene de un libro llamado The Elfstones of Shannara.
Evan: El nombre fue una elección estética, la banda no tiene ninguna conexión con los libros.
M.S:¿Qué es ese «Veil of imagination»? ¿Es este vuestro mejor disco?
Joe: ¡Creemos que es nuestro mejor álbum seguro! Normalmente a muchas bandas les gusta más su último lanzamiento. Personalmente, siento que es un disco que trata de recuperar la alegría y la emoción por las cosas que sientes cuando eres joven. La primera vez que escucho cierta música, la primera vez que viajo, cosas así. Queríamos pensar en esos pensamientos y sentimientos y por qué de alguna manera parece disminuir con el tiempo. Estamos contentos con todos nuestros registros, por supuesto, pero se sintió como una progresión tan natural.
M.S: Este álbum se ha reeditado a través de Century Media Records, imaginamos que estáis felices trabajando con CM, ¿verdad?
Joe: Estamos muy contentos de trabajar con Century Media Records. ¡Realmente es un sueño hecho realidad! Hasta ahora han sido geniales con nosotros y estamos emocionados de ver lo que nos depara el futuro. También estamos entusiasmados con la nueva versión; incluye una pista extra que grabamos versionando «Seventh Son of a Seventh Son» de Iron Maiden.
Dan: Crecí siguiendo a muchas de las bandas de su sello, así que ser parte de esa familia es muy especial para mí. Aún es temprano en nuestra relación de trabajo, pero hasta ahora, ¡todo bien!
M.S: Según vosotros, ¿Qué podéis aportar a la escena progresiva que otros grupos no hayan hecho?
Dan: Creo que lo que siempre ha sido especial para mí sobre Wilderun es que realmente tratamos de mezclar la atmósfera del folk y el black metal con la grandiosidad y la composición larga de las bandas progresivas. En la superficie, aparentemente provienen de mundos muy diferentes, pero a medida que crecemos como banda, encontramos más y más similitudes entre los dos.
Joe: No sé si necesariamente puedo describir qué es lo que aportamos a la escena progresiva, creo que es un poco más fácil que lo digan los que nos escuchan. Creo que algo interesante es lo que sentimos cuando interactuamos como banda; la amplia variedad de influencias que aporta cada miembro. Todos estamos inmersos en muchos tipos diferentes de música y es asombroso algunas de las sugerencias musicales que han planteado mis compañeros de banda, ya sea que se trate de una banda para escuchar o un punto de vista interesante de cómo debemos manejar un riff. Es bueno tener una variedad en lo que estamos tratando crear, porque realmente no sabes cómo va a caer en los oídos de otra persona.
M.S:La portada de «Veil of Imagination» es tan fantástica, elegante, maravillosa, asombrosa … No puedo seguir diciendo cosas buenas, jaja … ¿quién la hizo?
Joe: Adrian Cox es el nombre del artista que hizo la portada de «Veil of Imagination». ¡Él es increible! Recuerdo haber encontrado originalmente su arte en la portada de una revista Heavy Metal.
M.S:Después del Covid19, ¿habrá alguna posibilidad de verte presentando este álbum en vivo o haciendo algún tipo de gira?
Dan: ¡Por supuesto! Recientemente hemos confirmado un sutui en la próxima gira con Soilwork en el otoño del próximo año, por lo que será nuestra primera incursión en Europa, por lo que todos estamos muy emocionados. Y, por supuesto, todavía tenemos que averiguar cuándo podemos reprogramar nuestra gira pospuesta con nuestros amigos en Aeternam. Nuestros amigos estadounidenses en casa también necesitan un poco de amor.
Joe: Hemos hablado de tocar el disco completo en directo muchas veces, veremos si realmente sucede y cuándo.

M.S: Hello, thanks for your time… How are you?
Joe: Thanks for having us! Everyone is well over here. As the world is dealing with the Covid-19 situation we’re just trying to navigate that at the moment.
M.S: To get to know the band a little more, tell us how the idea of creating the band , your musical style, etc…
Evan: We originally started the band as a much more straightforward ‘folk metal’ project. I was listening to a lot of the European folk metal scene at the time, and wanted to try to do a sort of American twist on that sound. That is essentially what our debut “Olden Tales” was. After that record, we realized we didn’t necessarily want a whole career revolving around that one idea – it just felt a little limiting – so we started to expand into more dynamic compositional territories. Much of the folkiness and epicness of the first record still remains today, but I think in a more expansive, interesting way.
M.S: Where does the name of the band come from?
Joe: The name of the band comes from a book called The Elfstones of Shannara.
Evan: The name was very much an aesthetic choice, the band doesn’t have any connection to the books.
M.S: What is this “Veil of Imagination”? Is this your best album?
Joe: We feel it’s our best album for sure! I feel like a lot of bands like their latest release the most. Personally I feel it’s a record trying to recapture the joy and excitement for things you feel when you’re young. The first time hearing certain music, the first time traveling, things like that. We wanted to think about those thoughts and feelings and why it somehow seems to diminish over time. We’re happy with all of our records of course but this felt like such a natural progression.
M.S: This album is re issued through Century Media Records, we imagine that you are happy working with CM, right?
Joe: We’re very happy to be working with Century Media Records. It’s a dream come true really! They’ve been great to us so far and we’re excited to see what the future brings. We’re excited about the rerelease as well; it features a bonus track that we recorded covering Iron Maiden’s «Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.»
Dan: I grew up following a lot of the bands on their roster so being a part of that family is very special for me. It’s still early in our working relationship but so far, so good!
M.S: From your words, what can you bring to the prog scene that other groups have not done?
Dan: I think the thing that’s always been special to me about Wilderun is that we really try to blend the atmosphere of folk and black metal with the grandiosity and long-form songwriting of prog bands. On the surface, they seemingly come from very different worlds but as we grow as a band we’re finding more and more similarities between the two.
Joe: I don’t know if I can necessarily describe what it is we bring to the prog scene, I think it’s a little easier to decide that as an outside listener. I think something that we feel is interesting as we interact as a band; is the wide variety of influences each member brings. We all are engulfed in lots of different types of music and it’s amazing some of the musical suggestions my bandmates have brought up whether it’s a band to listen to or an interesting point of view of how we should handle a riff. It’s nice having a variety in what we’re trying to create, because you really don’t know how it’s going to fall on someone else’s ears.
M.S: “Veil of Imagination” cover is so fantastic, elegant, wonderful, amazing… I can’t follow say beautiful things, haha… who create it?
Joe: Adrian Cox is the name of the artist who painted the cover for «Veil of Imagination.» He’s awesome! I remember originally finding his art on the cover of a Heavy Metal Magazine.
M.S: After Covid19, Will there be any chance of seeing you presenting this album live or doing some kind of tour?
Dan: Absolutely! We have recently confirmed an opening slot on the upcoming tour with Soilwork in the fall of next year so that will be our first venture into Europe which we are all very excited for. And of course, we still need to figure out when we can reschedule our postponed tour with our friends in Aeternam can happen. Our US friends at home need some love as well.
Joe: We’ve talked about playing a full album live many times, we’ll see if and when it actually happens.
