M.S: Hola, a todos, lo primero agradeceros el tiempo concedido a Metal Symphony, y daros la enhorabuena por el gran trabajo que habéis realizado ¿Qué tal estais?
Erik Martensson: ¡Muchas gracias! Estoy muy feliz por el resultado final del disco, ha quedado un album excelente. Estoy muy contento, y ahora mismo voy a sentarme en mi estudio para producir un nuevo proyecto que tengo pensado junto con Jeff Scott Soto, y que saldrá también a través del sello Frontiers. Tu oirás hablar sobre este proyecto a comienzos del próximo año, que es cuando será editado este trabajo.
M.S.: A todos los lectores de Metal Symphony, les gustaría saber, como surgio este prouyecto, ¿Comó empezasteis en este mundo de la música? ¿Fue duro? ¿Os ha llamado desde siempre la atención la música?
Erik Martensson: Eclipse fue creado en 1999, que fue cuando yo empecé a realizar demos de algunas canciones, que yo había compuesto hace tiempo. Finalmente una semana después de finalizar el proceso de grabación de las demos, me decidí a grabar el primer album de Eclipse, a través de Z records.
Cuando llegué a un trato con ellos, el siguiente objetivo era conseguir los mejores músicos de Estocolmo para este proyecto y el resto es historia como dicen. Eclipse fue fundado y comenzó el viaje.
Personalmente siempre he estado muy interesado en la música. Mi hermano mayor escuchaba Hard Rock, cuando éramos jóvenes, por lo que he crecido escuchando a bandas como WASP, Motley Crue etc las mismas bandas que actualemente me gustan mucho y que suelo escuchar a día de hoy.
M.S.: En este nuevo trabajo, que habeis editado, nos encontramos con sonidos muy arraigados hacia el Hard Rock, hay canciones que recuerdan incluso a Whitesnake y a Talismán. A la hora de componer las letras y la música, ¿Que influencias tenéis en cuenta?
Erik Martensson: Cuando empecé a escribir la música para este álbum, pensé que es lo que realmente quería hacer, quería un disco el cual pudieramos escuchar nosotros mismos. Queríamos tener un album que transmitiera fiesta, Rock y sobre todo que tuviera un sonido salvaje.
Así que estuve una semana fuera, compré un lote de cerveza y licor, y a continuación yo y el guitarrista Magnus entramos a escribir canciones. Fue una auténtica locura de semana. Sin embargo, durante esa semana, llegamos a realizar diez canciones. Nueve de ellas terminaron en el album "Are You Ready To Rock" !
M.S.:“Are You Ready To Rock”, presenta un sonido muy nítido y muy logrado, practicamente todas las canciones suenan muy frescas. ¿Quién os ha ayudado en la producción? En esta línea. ¿Os costo mucho finalizar este nuevo trabajo?
Erik Martensson: El disco fue producido por Magnus y yo. Tengo mi propio estudio, (Blowout Productions, www.blowoutproductions.com), por lo que he grabado, mezclado y masterizado todo el álbum yo mismo. Es un trabajo muy duro el grabar y mezclar discos, pero con este álbum todo fue rápido, fue muy divertido e inspirador.
M.S.:Habéis conseguido unos temas, que realmente suenan potentes y melódicos a la vez. Uno de los temas que más me ha llamado la atención es “Call Of The Wild”, ¿Qué me podéis contar de este tema?
Erik Martensson: He tenido durante días el verso de las melodías de esa canción en mi cabeza. Mientras estaba sentado y dándo vueltas en torno a la canción con Magnus , yo estaba en un tren de regreso a Estocolmo y prácticamente escribií la canción con el envío de mensajes de voz que me iban llegando al movil Cuando bajé del tren en la estación central ,la canción estaba más o menos terminada. Líricamente, se trata de la forma en que siempre tratamos de actuar civilizadamente, pero de vez en cuando el animal de uno mismo siempre quiere salir. Hace referencia mas o menos a los gritos de algunos sábados por la noche loca!
M.S.:Siguiendo con el análisis de “Are You Ready To Rock”, otro de los temas, que más sobresale, es “Breaking My Heart Again”, perfectamente podría encajar como single ¿Qué opinais?
Erik Martensson: Es absolutamente uno de mis pistas favoritas del álbum. Cuando se escribió esta canción nos parecía muy similar a la "Light Out" de OVNI. Pero cuando empezamos a grabar la canción nos dimos cuenta de que el sonido de las guitarras se quedaba demasiado flojo y cojo, así que reorganizamos las guitarras y el resultado fue sólo pura magia! La canción entera pasó a ser de relleno a ser la apertura de una pista.
M.S.:La verdad es que en mi opinión estamos, ante una auténtica joya de Hard Rock Melódico, sin duda alguna, estará dentro de los grandes discos de este año 2008, en cuanto a Rock Melódico se refiere. Anteriormente he nombrado que este disco presenta rasgos y matices de grupos como Whitesnake y Talismán, uno de los temas en donde se puede apreciar esto, es en “Hard Time Loving You”, tiene todos los alicientes adecuados para poder convertirse en un tema muy pegadizo, ¿Cómo surgió este tema?
Erik Martensson: Muchas gracias, por tener esa opinión sobre nuestro album. Tenemos un montón de influencias en este álbum. Sólo quería hacer un gran álbum de rock duro y, a continuación, volver a los viejos maestros de mi inspiración. Todos nosotros en la banda hemos crecido con muchas influencias del Hard Rock, y asi mismo esto lo llevamos en la sangre.
La canción "Hard Time Loving You" también se ha elaborado durante el mismo período de sesiones por escrito como he hablado antes. Para mí, es un homenaje a Richie Blackmores de Rainbow. Quería que tuviera un ambiente total y absoluto a Rainbow.
M.S.:Eclipse lleva en su carrera tres discos editados, ¿Me podríais decir, qué diferencias puede haber con respecto a los anteriores trabajos?
Erik Martensson: Los anteriores álbumes fueron más orientados hacia el AOR. Es bastante gracioso porque todos nosotros en la banda solemos escuchar más clásicos del Hard Rock y del Metal y no del AOR. Considero que es mucho más interesante verlo como un trabajo que esta en pleno progreso. Con este nuevo álbum creo que hemos encontrado el lugar donde nuestros corazones pertenecen musicalmente. "Are You Ready To Rock " es un disco más sencillo y más orientado hacia el sonido de guitarras, que los anteriores trabajos de estudio.
M.S.:Hay muchas canciones destacables en “Are You Ready To Rock”. ¿Cuáles son las que más os llaman a vosotros la atención? ¿Cuáles os gusta más? ¿Porqué?
Erik Martensson: Mi canción favorita en el álbum es absolutamente "Young Guns". Es una canción de Hard Rock intenso y donde se puede apreciar realmente todas las caracteristicas del sonido de Eclipse. Para mí no existe ningún tema flojo en este “Are You Ready To Rock” ¡ Todos en la banda hemos trabajado duramente para darlo todo en este álbum, que sin ninguna es el mejor disco que ha creado Eclipse hasta la fecha.
M.S.:Eclipse, proviene de Suecia, de donde están saliendo muchísimas bandas de Rock Melódico, como por ejemplo, W.O.A y H.E.A.T. ¿Estáis al corriente de esta nueva oleada de bandas en vuestro país?
Erik Martensson: Sí, soy de Suecia y conozco a estas dos grandes bandas. e incluso he estado trabajando mucho tiempo con el excelente guitarrista de W.O.A, Robert Sall. Creo que la escena del Hard Rock melódico en Suecia esta en un buenísmo momento actualmente, con respecto a épocas anteriores.Este tipo de Hard Rock y AOR de calidad ha estado presente en mi país desde la década de los 80.
M.S.:A los lectores de Metal Symphony, les gustaría saber ¿Cuáles son los planes de Eclipse para el próximo año? ¿Existe la posibilidad de hacer una gira por España?
Erik Martensson: Estamos trabajando en conciertos en vivo y, quizás hagamos, una gira europea para el próximo año. Tenemos muchas cosas en mente, en este momento. Os anunciaremos la próxima gira tan pronto como nosotros lo sepamos. Pero nos gustaría totalmente girar por España en un fúturo más bien próximo.
M.S.:Cuando estáis lejos del estudio y de los periodos de grabación, es decir tranquilamente en vuestra casa ¿Qué tipo de música soléis escuchar? Y en este sentido, aparte de escuchar música, ¿Qué otro tipo de cosas os gusta hacer en vuestro tiempo libre? 
Erik Martensson: Escucho sobre todo clásicos del Hard Rock . Me gustan muchos estilos musicales, pero el 90 por ciento es de Hard Rock. También me gustan más bandas como Slayer y Megadeth. Pero, como he dicho antes, yo escucho la mayoría de los clásicos del Hard Rock y Metal.
En mi tiempo libre me gusta conducir mi moto y viajar por todo el mundo. Este verano estuve en España durante tres semanas. En un pequeño pueblo llamado Abla situado 60 kilometros al norte de Almería. Fue un viaje muy interesante y relajante para mi. Durante el invierno suelo ir a las pistas de Esqui de Suecia y también a los Alpes.
M.S.:Bueno, creo que esto es todo, agradeceros de nuevo vuestra colaboración con Metal Symphony, y deciros desde aquí, que estamos ansiosos por poderos ver en directo, en nuestro país, ¿Quereis añadir alguna cosa más para los lectores de Metal Symphony?
Erik Martensson: Gracias a vosotros por la entrevista en vuestra web! M.S: Hi to all of you, first we want to thank you for the time granted to Metal Symphony and also congratulate you for a job greatly done. How are you?
E.M: (This is the singer Erik Martensson writing) Thank you! We are also very pleased with the result of our latest and greatest album.
Anyway, I’m fine. Right now I’m sitting in my studio producing a new project for Frontiers featuring Jeff Scott Soto on vocals. You will hear more of this next year when the album will be released.
M.S: Every single reader of Metal Symphony wonders how the project was born. How were your beginnings in the world of music? Was it tough? Have you always been appealed by music?
E.M: The Eclipse project was born in 1999 when I started out doing demos of my own songs. Just one week after the demo was finished I landed a record deal with the English label Z Records.
When I got the deal with them I headhunted the best musicians in Stockholm for the project and the rest is history as they say. Eclipse was founded and the journey begun.
Personally I have always been very interested in music. My older brother listened to hard rock when we were young, so I grew up listening to band like WASP, Motley Crue etc. The same bands that I still love and listen to today.
M.S: In this new work that you’ve edited we find sounds that are much aligned with Hard Rock, there are songs that even remind of Whitesnake and Talisman. When it comes to writing lyrics and music, what influences do you bear in mind?
E.M: When we started to write music for this album we really wanted to make a record that we wanted to listen to ourselves. We wanted to have a record that you could put on at a party and get wild.
So we took a week off, bought a lot of beer and booze, and then me and the guitarist Magnus went into the Swedish countryside to write songs. It was a crazy week. But during that week we had done ten songs. Nine of them ended up on the “Are You Ready To Rock” album!
M.S: "Are You Ready To Rock" displays a very clear sound and it’s a great achievement; practically every single track sounds very fresh. Who assisted you with production? Also in this context, was it costly to get this work done?
E.M: The album was actually produced by Magnus and me. I have my own studio, (Blowout Productions, www.blowoutproductions.com), so I have recorded, mixed and mastered the whole album by myself. It’s a lot of hard work to record and mix albums but with this album everything went quick, it was a lot of fun and inspiring.
M.S: You have achieved songs that sound both really powerful and melodic. One of the tracks that have gotten my attention is "Call of the Wild". What can you tell me about it?
E.M: I have had the verse melodies for that song in my head for some time. While I was sitting and fooling around with the song Magnus was on a train back to Stockholm and we actually wrote the song by sending voice messages back and fourth our mobile phones. When he got off the train at central station the song was more or less finished. Lyrically it’s about how we always try to act civilized, but from time to time the animal inside you wants to get out. It screams even louder on some crazy Saturday nights!
M.S: Following our review of "Are You Ready to Rock", another outstanding song is "Breaking My Heart Again"; it could perfectly fit as a single. What do you say?
E.M: It’s absolutely one of my favorite tracks on the album. When we wrote this song it was very similar to “Light Out” by UFO. But when we started to record the song and it was time to put down the guitars we felt it was sounding too lame and old. We totally rearranged the guitars and the result was just pure magic! The whole song shifted from filler to an opening track.
M.S: The truth is, in my opinion, we are in front of a true gem of Melodic Hard Rock; without a doubt it will rank among the biggest releases in 2008 in the field of Melodic Rock. I have mentioned beforehand that there are traits and reminiscences of bands such as Whitesnake and Talisman. One of the tracks where we can appreciate this is "Hard Time Loving You", it’s got all the adequate ingredients to become a very catchy song. How was this song crafted?
E.M: Thank you very much. I’m very honored that you like the album so much. We have a lot of influences on this album. We just wanted to do a great hard rock album and then you have to go back to the old masters for inspiration. All of us in the band have this music running through our veins.
The song “Hard Time Loving You” was also crafted during that same writing session as I spoke about earlier. For me, this one is somewhat a tribute to Richie Blackmores Rainbow. Not any specific song, we just wanted to catch the Rainbow vibe that is so great.
M.S: Eclipse has released three albums throughout its career. Could you tell me what are the differences compared to previous works?
E.M: The earlier albums are more AoR oriented. It’s kind of funny that they are, as all of us in the band listen more to classic hard rock and metal and not AoR. They are more interesting to see as a work in progress. With this new album I feel that we have found the place where our hearts belong musically. “Are You Ready To Rock” is more straightforward and even more guitar oriented than before.
M.S: There are many highlight songs in "Are You Ready To Rock". Which ones get most of your attention? Which do you prefer? Why?
E.M: My favorite track on the album is absolutely “Young Guns”. It’s a very intensive hard rock song that really catches all things that Eclipse stands for. But I really like a lot of the songs on this album. To me there are no weak tracks. Everyone in the band really gives it all on this album making this by far the best we have ever achieved so far with Eclipse.
M.S: Eclipse is from Sweden, where many other Melodic Rock bands have, like for example, W.O.A and H.E.A.T. Are you aware of this new wave of bands in your country?
E.M: Yes, I am. They are both great bands. I’ve been working a lot with W.O.A’s talented guitarist Robert Säll. I think the melodic hard rock scene in Sweden is better now than in many years. This kind of quality hard rock and AoR hasn’t come out of this country since the 80’s.
M.S: Metal Symphony readers would like to know what are Eclipse’s plans for next year. Will you do a tour in Spain, by any chance?
E.M: We are working on live gigs and maybe a European tour for next year. A lot of thinks are going on at the moment. We will announce this as soon as we know ourselves. But we would absolutely love to go to Spain.
M.S: When you’re away from the studio and the recording sessions, that is, in the peace of your homes, what type of music do you listen to? What other stuff do you do during your free time?
E.M: I listen mostly to classic hard rock bands. But I enjoy many musical styles even if 90 percent is hard rock. I also like harder bands as Slayer and Megadeth. But as I said earlier, I listen mostly classic hard rock and metal.
On my free time I enjoy driving my motorcycle and travel around the world. This summer I was actually in Spain for three weeks. In a little village called Abla about 60km north of Almeria. A very relaxing and interesting trip. During the winter I’m an off-pist fanatic and I love going skiing in the Alps.
M.S: Well, I believe that’s all, we would like to thank you again for collaborating with Metal Symphony. We also wanted to say that we are eager to see you perform live in our country. Is there anything else that you wanted to add for Metal Symphony’s readers?
