M.S: Hola Henrik, gracias por disponer de un tiempo con nosotros hoy. ¿Que tal estás?.
Henrik: Bien, gracias.
M.S: Desde un punto de vista externo, ¿qué piensas de la unidad de Sonata Arctica después de todos estos años?
H: Ahora mismo el espíritu de la banda está muy arriba, estamos con muchas ganas de volver a la carretera con el nuevo disco y tenemos grandes esperanzas para el futuro. Ahora mismo también nos llevamos muy bien entre nosotros y las cosas fluyen muy bien trabajando juntos.
M.S: ¿Cuanto duró el proceso de creación de The Days of Grays (desde la composición, hasta la pre-producción y la grabación)?
H: Tony compuso la mayoría de temas entre diciembre de 2008 y febrero de 2009, a mediados de febrero comenzamos los ensayos, que nos llevaron 6 semanas (arreglar las canciones y trabajar los detalles) la grabación duró unos dos meses y la mezcla un mes. Así que, en total fueron siete meses de trabajo en el álbum.
M.S: ¿Como vino la idea de grabar con Johanna Kurkela?
H: Necesitábamos una voz femenina para dos de las canciones y como conocíamos a Johanna con anterioridad y sabíamos que tiene una bonita voz, decidimos preguntarle. Ella es una popular cantante pop en Finlandia.
M.S: Menos solos y estructuras musicales más complejas, esa parece ser la evolución de Sonata Arctica. ¿Estás de acuerdo? ¿Puedes explicar esta evolución desde tu punto de vista?
H: Si, estoy de acuerdo, nuestra evolución ha sido siempre una parte natural de nuestras vidas, llevamos juntos bastante tiempo y, a medida que crecemos como personas y como músicos, nuestro modo de ver la vida cambia constantemente y eso se refleja también en nuestra música. Espero que continuemos evolucionando, hacia donde, no lo sé, pero lo más importante para nosotros es mantener todo esto interesante y explorar la música metal en todas sus diferentes vertientes.
M.S: Mirando atrás a vuestro anterior disco, Unia, ¿habéis cambiado algo en la manera de componer?
H: Realmente no, seguimos trabajando del mismo modo que antes. En Unia, eso sí, dimos un paso adelante en términos de complejidad y multitud de melodías.
M.S: ¿Cómo de diferente es "The Days of Grays" en comparación con cualquier anterior trabajo de Sonata Arctica?
H: Diría que es una combinación del “nuevo” sonido que descubrimos en Unia y multitud de influencias de nuestro pasado también. Espero que hayamos descubierto alguna cosa nueva con este álbum también.
M.S: Más de diez años de Sonata Arctica, ¿va a haber algún tipo de evento para celebrarlo?
H: No hemos pensado realmente en ello todavía, ahora mismo tenemos una gran gira cerca y estamos concentrados en ello, pero estoy seguro que alguna cosa haremos para celebrar nuestra carrera.
M.S: ¿Podrías explicar en tres palabras como describirías la música de Sonata Arctica?
H: Tony fucking Kakko…..jeje, en serio podría ser algo como: Metal Melódico Progresivo.
M.S: ¿Hay algún país o ciudad donde te hayas sentido más cómodo para tocar?
H: Realmente no, pero te puedo asegurar que el más difícil e incómodo lugar para tocar es nuestra ciudad, supongo que porque siempre hay muchos amigos y familia en los conciertos y eso nos pone más nerviosos… afortunadamente no tocamos siempre en Kemi.
M.S: ¿Cambiarias algo de la industria musical de hoy en día?
H: Todo el rollo de la piratería y las descargas ilegales es un desastre, creo que el formato cd está muriendo lentamente (desgraciadamente, porque a mí me gusta tener mis discos como cds y no en archivos en un disco duro). No cambiaria realmente nada en profundidad… si cambias algo, afecta a todas las demás partes en la industria, básicamente me gusta dejar la parte del negocio a otra gente que se ocupe de ello.
M.S: ¿Seguís teniendo relación con Jani (el anterior guitarra)?
H: La verdad es que no, él ya no vive en la misma ciudad que nosotros y no he oído hablar de él en un par de años.
M.S: ¿Como imaginas Sonata Arctica en diez años?
H: Espero que sigamos haciendo esto… y no veo por que no tendríamos que seguir haciéndolo. Estaremos probablemente en el estudio o de gira, una de las dos cosas que suelen hacer los grupos.

M.S: Hi guys, thank you for spending some time with us today. How are you doing?.

M.S: From an outsider’s point of view, What do you think of the Sonata Arctica unity after so many years?
H: At the moment the band spirit is really high, we’re excited to go back on the road with the new album and we have big hopes for
the future. Right now we’re also getting along really well so working toghether is really smooth.
M.S: How long took the whole process to create The Days of Grays (from composition, pre-production and recording)?
H: Tony composed most of the songs during december 08 and february 09, mid-february we started the rehearsals which took us 6 weeks (to arrange the songs and work out the details) the recording took about two months, the mixing one month so all in all it’s about 7 months of work on the album.
M.S: How came the idea of recording with Johanna Kurkela?
H: We needed a female voice for two of the songs and since we knew Johanna from before and knew she has a beautiful voice we decided to ask her. She’s a quite well known pop-singer in Finland.
M.S: Less solos and more complex musical structures, that seems to be the evolution of Sonata Arctica. Do you agree? Can you explain how do you see this evolution?.
H: Yeah I agree, our evolution has always been a natural part of our lives, the band has now been together for a really long time and as we grow as persons and as musicians, our view on life changes constantly and that also shows in our music. I do expect us to continue to evolve, where, I have no idea but the main thing for us is to keep it interesting and explore metal music and all of it’s different sides.
M.S: Looking back to Unia, have you changed something in the way of composing the songs?
H: Not really, we still work the same way as before. On Unia though we pushed the envelope quite a bit in terms of complexity and multitude of melodies.
M.S: How different is "The Days of Grays" from any preceding Sonata Arctica album?
H: I would say it’s a combination of the "new " sound we discovered on Unia and a lot of influences from our past as well. I hope that we also discovered
at least some new thing with this album as well.
M.S: More than 10 years with Sonata Arctica, is there going to be a special event to celebrate it?
H: We haven’t really thought about it yet, right now we have a massive world tour coming up and our focus is on that but I’m sure we’ll come up with something interesting to do as a celebration of our career.
M.S: Could you explain using just three words how do you describe the music of Sonata Arctica?
H: Tony fucking Kakko…..hehe, seriously though it could be: Melodic Progressive Metal
M.S: Is there a country/city where you feel more confortable to play than others?
H: Not really but I’ll tell ya, the most difficult/unconfortable place to play is our hometown, I guess it’s because there’s always a lot of friends and family on the shows and that makes us more nervous….luckily we don’t play in Kemi all the time.
M.S: What would you change from music industry nowadays (if something)?
H: The whole piracy-illegal downloading thing is a mess, I think that cd as a format is slowly dying (unfortunately, because I like to have my albums as cd’s and not as some files on a hard drive). I wouldn’t really change anything major…..If you change one thing it affects all other parts of the industry so basically I like to leave to business side for other people to worry about.
M.S: Are you still in touch with Jani (the preceding guitar player)?
H: No not really, he doesn’t live in the same town as us anymore and I haven’t heard from him in a couple of years.
M.S: How do you imagine Sonata Arctica in ten years?
H: Hopefully we’re still doing this….and I don’t know why we wouldn’t. We’re probably in the studio or on the road…either one of the two things that bands should be doing.
