Interview with Nasson about «Scars»

We spoke with Nasson, guitarist of Sinner’s Blood, to introduce us to his new album «Scars» released by Frontiers Music… He tells us about the release among other things…

David Aresté

M.S: It is a pleasure to have you on our site, we hope you are well.

Thanks for having me! All fine in here, working on tons of new music!

M.S: When did you start thinking about the project? We suppose that with the lockdown you were able to advance in the composition of the album, right?

Well, the idea of a solo project of my own is not a new one. More tan a decade ago I released some material as a solo artist. Being independent at that time, it had somewhat considerable spread in the chilean scene, but tons of years, albums and bands have passed and this is definitely a new start. About the lockdown, I don’t know how much it impacted my productivity. I’m constantly lockdown in the studio hahaha, recording, writing or somehow working on music, so in that sense, I’m lucky to say it wasn’t a big change for me.

M.S: Listening to your album we see that it is a very strong album and it has positive vibes, how do you see it? What is different from the others in the scene…

Thanks! I think it’s a powerful album. Without being conceptual or anything alike, it has an autobiographical component so I have a big connection to every song. Being a solo record I took the liberty to write mostly about my own experiences and that makes it very passionated. I would say that something that’s somewhat unique is the range of influences you can find on it. From heavy/power metal to AOR, modern melodic metal and modern pop, etc, but of course, always trying to keep an identity across all those mixes.

M.S: We liked how you sing on the album… how do you feel in this role?

It’s very natural to me, is the role I’ve taken most of my music career, this in lesser known projects, but even in Sinner’s Blood I record most of the background vocals and in Chaos Magic, Caterina Nix and me share the leads in several tracks. So I’m happy that this record will bring some aknowledgment about that!

M.S: A typical… What’s the difference between Sinner’s Blood and this project?

It’s a bit difficult for me to say, although several opinions have agreed that they actually are quite different. For me, Sinner’s Blood plays on the more traditional side of the field, even though including modern elements, it’s always «very metal». I think that «Scars» is more musically flexible and, although it is very heavy, that’s not the main drive on the album.

M.S: As a producer … how has the guitar work on this album been compared to SB’s?

It’s interesting that my guitar approach for both projects is very different. I think that in Sinner’s Blood the synth arrangements are lesser and less protagonist, so in the end I think of it as a power trio and because of that, the guitar lines are super bussy! I want to have that beast of a riff that drives the song. In my solo project, keyboards are more prominent and there are tons of elements, so I have to balance the amount of information every instrument is bringing. That makes these guitar lines a little more static, focused on the rhythm and more «at the service» of the general arrangement.

M.S: Will there be the possibility to see your songs live? Or will it depend for example on the concerts you have with Sinner’s Blood?

I’m hoping to play at least a few shows this year, but of course that will depend on the Sinner’s Blood and Chaos Magic activities, besides my work on the studio, so it will be a bussy year, but yeah, I’d love to play some shows and if I can’t tour solo, I’d like to record some live performance. We’ll see!

M.S: An obligatory question… will there be a second album?

Yes! For now, I jut finished the new Chaos Magic album a few weeks ago and now I’m writing the new Sinner’s Blood songs, and for other artists and projects such as Rosa Laricchiuta’s Black Rose Maze. There’s a lot on my plate right now, but when the time comes, I’ll start working on a follow up for «Scars» for sure.

M.S: Thank you for your time, it has been a pleasure to have you here, we wish you good luck with your album and we hope to see you soon on stage.

Thanks again for having me! Hope to see you on tour soon!
