M.S: Hola Neal, es un placer compartir un poco de tu tiempo contigo, que tal estás? Antes que nada déjame darte la enhorabuena por tu brillante "Live?"
N.M: ¡Muchas gracias!
M.S: La primera sorpresa que nos llevamos es que este "Live?" sale editado por Mascot Records, en vez de Insideout Music como todos tus otros lanzamientos. Solo será para este disco o será tu nuevo distribuidor?
N.M: Bueno, estamos probando cosas. Lo hicimos con Mascot aquella vez, pero el siguiente lo lanzará InsideOut.
M.S: Hablando de la banda que te acompaña en directo, nos los podías describir un poco a cada uno de ellos…
N.M: Wilco (bajista) es un tio joven (veintipoco años); es estupendo con su instrumento y un tio que da gusto tener cerca. Hank (teclista) también toca muy bien y además es un bonachón. Jessica (voz y percusión) es la esposa de Colin (batería); realmente consigue unas voces con mucho empaque y además les da mucha caña a los del grupo. Colin es el director musical del grupo. También es nuestra "niñera" y nuestro manager de giras, y el organizador de toda la banda. Y además toca la batería muy bien.
M.S: Fue difícil elegir las imágenes para el DVD? Teniendo en cuenta que es un DVD doble, más de 6 horas de música…. El hecho de decidir si grabar un concierto íntegro o trozos de varios… Explícanos como fue por favor.
N.M: El primer disco es un concierto largo. El segundo es una peli sobre lo que sucede tras el telón y por último, material de directo en Berlín y algún que otro directo que no se grabó para el concierto principal.
M.S: En el estudio te han acompañado Mike Portnoy, Randy George y Paul Gilbert, has tratado de hacer un concierto con ellos o ha sido imposible por sus ocupaciones?
N.M: Sí, son tipos que andan bastante ocupados. Además, traerlos aquí en avión habría sido demasiado caro.
M.S: Cambiando de tema, vemos que siempre has estado vinculado con la religión, ¿qué has sentido al tocar en una iglesia en los últimos conciertos?
N.M: Me encanta tocar en iglesias. Se parece más a una misa [que a un concierto]. A menudo asisto al párroco e incluso predico un poco.
M.S: ¿En qué crees que habrías trabajado de no ser músico? Algo relacionado con la religión tal vez?
N.M: No sé lo que habría sido hace tiempo. No tenía aptitudes ni interés en nada que no fuera la música. Ahora es diferente. Tomaría lo que Dios me pidiera, como fregar suelos o dirigir al coro. Dios otorga gracia a todo trabajo que ofrece en Su casa.
M.S: Volviendo a tu carrera, hoy en día … ¿Tienes algún sueño por satisfacer? Si es así, ¿cuál es ese sueño?
N.M: Para ser sincero, ya no idolatro a ningún músico. Creo que sería interesante trabajar con gente como Peter Gabriel o Paul McCartney. Pero no tengo la cabeza puesta en eso ahora mismo. Sólo me interesa tocar con quien el Señor quiera que toque. Ahi está mi gozo ahora mismo.
M.S: Recordamos que tu último concierto en Barcelona fue muy íntimo y acústico. ¿Qué tipo de recuerdos tienes de la última vez que estuviste aquí?
N.M: Ahí estaban mi hermano Richard y mi padre. Este último se subió a escena y cantó "The Impossible Dream". Estaba colgado en YouTube, no sé si sigue ahí. Fue una gran velada.
M.S: Fuisteis al festival Night of the Prog con Pain of Salvation y The flowers kings. ¿Como fue el concierto ? Habrá más conciertos para presentar este DVD? Para España … tal vez..
N.M: El festival fue en julio. No creo que se haga un DVD. Fue bueno e interesante. Tuvimos un montón de problemas técnicos al principio. Además, tuve problemas con la voz. Pese a todo, nos pidieron que tocaramos más y ahí fue cuando todo pareció arreglarse.
M.S: Hablando un poco del futuro, hay algo compuesto para el próximo disco?
N.M: "Lifeline" está terminado y sale el 30 de septiembre. Habrá una edición especial con un disco bonus con 6 cortes adicionales. He escrito otra pieza, pero no tengo claro que voy a hacer con ella. Todavía lo medito en mis rezos.
M.S: Qué es lo próximo que harás? O habrá más conciertos de este tipo para presentar el DVD?
N.M: No tengo planes ahora mismo. Me estoy preparando para un concierto en California la semana que viene, pero más allá de esto no tengo ningún plan definitivo.
M.S: ¿Crees que el género de rock / metal progresivo está creciendo? Además de tus trabajos, hemos tenido grandes giras de Dream Theater, Opeth, nuevos discos de Symphony X, de Spock Beard, el regreso de la original Asia … ¿Qué piensas de esto?
N.M: Creo que es estupendo. No sé si está creciendo. Algunas bandas crecen mientras que otras no. No tengo claro que el género esté creciendo. Simplemente estoy orgulloso de tener una audiencia y de hacer aquello que amo.
M.S: Nuestras preguntas terminan aquí, gracias de nuevo por tu tiempo, ha sido un placer, algún mensaje final para nuestros lectores y tus fans?

MS: Hello Neal, is a pleasure to have a bit of your time. How are you? First of all let me congratulate you by your brilliant "Live?"
N.M: Thank you very much!
MS: At The first thing that surprised us is that this "Live?" leave for sale by Mascot Records, instead Insideout as all of your previous record. Has only been in this record or it will be your new distributor?
N.M: Well, we are trying things. We tried Mascot that time, but the next one will be released by InsideOut.
MS: As we speak of the band, tell us about the members with you play at concerts, Describe a little each of them…
N.M: Wilco (bass player) is a young guy (early 20s); awesome player and fun guy to be around.
Hank (the keyboard player) is great player as well, and a real good natured guy.
Jessica (vocals / percussion) is Colin’s (drummer) wife; she really gets the vocals together (she really cracks the whip on those guys).
Colin is the music director for the band. He also is our ‘babysitter’ and tour manager and organizer for the entire band. He also plays the drums very well.
MS: Was it difficult to choose the images for the DVD? Given that the DVD is a double DVD, it have more than 6 hours of music…. The fact of decide whether to pick up pieces of several concerts or one full…. Tell us please.
N.M: The first disc is one long concert. The second disc is a behind the scenes movie, then some live stuff in Berlin the previous year and some other things we have done live that was not recorded for the main concert.
MS: In the study Mike Portnoy and Paul Gilbert has accompanied you, an attempt was made to make a concert with them or have been impossible for their occupations?
N.M: Yeah, they are pretty busy guys. Plus, flying them over would be too expensive as well.
MS: Changing subject, we see that you’re always linked with religion, what did you feel playing in a church in the past concerts?
N.M: I love playing in the churches. It is more like a church service. I will often testify and even preach a little bit.
M.S: In which job do you think you worked if you hasn’t been a musician? Something related to religion perhaps?
N.M: In the early days, I don’t know what I would have been. I had no skills or interest in anything other than music. Now, it is different. I would take anything that God wants (cleaning the floors, directing the choir). Any job that God gives in His house He will put joy in.
MS: Returning to your career, today… Do you have any whish for meet? If do you, what is that dream?
N.M: To be honest, I don’t really idolize musicians anymore. I do think it would be interesting to work with people like Peter Gabriel, or Paul McCartney. But that is not really where my mind is now. I am interested in playing with whoever the Lord wants me to play with. That is where the joy is for me now.
MS: Let us remember your last concert in Barcelona was very intimate and acoustic. What sort of memories do you have of the last time you been here?
N.M: That is when my brother Richard and my Dad were there. He came up and sang “The Impossible Dream.” It was on YouTube, don’t know if it still is. That was a great night.
MS: At present we know you are going to participate in the Night of the Prog with Pain of Salvation and The Flowers Kings. What kind of expectations have you about this festival? There will be more concerts to bring this DVD? For Spain jeje perhaps…
N.M: That festival was in July. I don’t think it will be made into a DVD. It was interesting and good. We had a lot of technical problems at the beginning. Plus, I was having vocal problems, too. Despite this, they asked to play longer, and that is when everything seemed to come together.
MS: Speaking a bit of the future, there is something composed for the next record?
N.M: Lifeline is done and coming out on Sept. 30th. There will be a special edition with a bonus disc with 6 extra tracks. I have written another piece, but am not sure what to do with it. I am still praying about it.
MS: If so, what is next to what you do? Or instead said there will be more concerts like to present this DVD?
N.M: I don’t have any plans right now. I am getting ready to do a concert in CA next week, but beyond that I don’t have any definite plans.
MS: Do you think the genre of rock / progressive metal is growing? Beside of your works, we had great tours of Dream Theater, Opeth, new releases of Symphony X, Spock’s Beard, the return of the original Asia… What do you think about this?
N.M: I think its great. I don’t know if it is growing. Some bands seem to be growing while others are not. I am not sure if the genre is growing. I am just glad to have listeners and to do what I love.
MS: Any final message for our readers and your fans?
N.M: Well, the big thing we are excited about right now is Lifeline on Sept. 30. You can pre-order it the special edition at www.radiantrecords.com starting on August 30th. Other than that I just want to say Matthew 6.33 (KJV), “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
