M.S: Hola, gracias por contestar a nuestras preguntas y gracias por lanzar vuestro Nuevo disco en España antes que en otros paises europeos, jeje. ¿Cómo estais?
T: Estoy genial, gracias! Feliz de estar vivo! 🙂
M.S: Dado que aún no os habíamos entrevistado, podríais presentaros vosotros mismos a nuestros lectores? Cuéntanos algo sobre cuando y como se formó el grupo, la situación actual y vuestro nuevo trabajo…
T: El primer lanzamiento de Tristania salió hace 12 años. El grupo, rápidamente obtuvo un gran y muy dedicado seguimiento debido a extensas giras y lanzamientos de discos. Durante los últimos tres años –desde el lanzamiento de Illumination, el quinto álbum- el grupo tiene una nueva formación, todavía con los miembros originales Anders Hoyvik Hidle y Einar Moen como núcleo principal. Mientras tanto, hemos estado de gira en Latino América y hemos hecho unos cuantos conciertos en Europa, además de componer y grabar nuevo material para nuestro nuevo álbum, Rubicon. Nos ha llevado tiempo, pero estamos contentos por la manera en que han cambiado las cosas. Estamos todos más hambrientos que nunca de salir ahí fuera y tocar, y nos encantaría ir y dar algunas actuaciones en España.
M.S: Si alguien quiere buscar información sobre vosotros, ¿dónde podrían oíros o comprar vuestros discos?

M.S: ¿Cómo adaptásteis las nuevas canciones de este álbum para obtener algo diferente a los anteriores?
T: Debido a los cambios en la formación, y al hecho de que todo el mundo estaba dispuesto –y animado por los antiguos miembros- a contribuir en la realización de todo, sabíamos que el resultado podría diferir ligeramente del material anterior. Pero por otra parte, todos los lanzamientos de Tristania han tenido su propio sello en términos de estados anímicos y ambientales, y este nuevo álbum es fiel a esta tradición.
La gran diferencia entre este álbum y el resto, es probablemente que la ambientación es más brillante, o más fresca, si lo prefieres. Pero todavía está envuelto de oscuridad y melancolía en la mayoría de las canciones. Los anteriores lanzamientos han sido, todos, una reacción, o un paso lógico a dar, tras el álbum que vino antes. Esto hace de “Rubicon” una consecuencia de “Ilumination”, de la misma manera que el último fue una reacción a “Ashes”. No obstante, la gente que esté familiarizada con los discos anteriores, reconocerá, sin lugar a dudas, algo de sus familiares y grandiosos elementos sinfónicos.
M.S: ¿Cómo fue el proceso de unión de Mariangela a Tristania? ¿Qué cualidades tiene sobre el escenario?
T: Tras la marcha de Vibeke Stene, obviamente estábamos buscando una nueva cantante, y Mariangela fue una de las muchas vocalistas que contactó con nosotros. Estábamos interesados en aventurarnos en otra dirección, al menos en lo que concierne a la expresión vocal femenina, y ciertamente no se quería una sombría copia de Vibeke. Afortunadamente, Mariangela llegó a ser exactamente, lo que nosotros estábamos buscando. Nos dejó atónitos con su maravillosa puesta en escena, trayendo con ella cierto nervio y temperamento a la banda. Su voz es potente, reconocible y extremadamente versátil. Lo mismo se puede decir de su personalidad.
M.S: ¿Cómo se puso en contacto con vosotros la organización de MFVF? ¿Les mandásteis primero vuestro material? ¿U os llamaron? Estoy seguro/a de que estáis más que orgullosos por participar en este festival que se celebra cada año, ¿me equivoco?
T: Es un gran honor tocar en este festival, por supuesto. De hecho, ya habíamos actuado allí, allá por el 2006, pero estamos más que preparados para volver. La inscripción para actuaciones como esta se lleva a cabo a través de nuestra compañía alemana de gestión y reservas (Continental Concerts and Management).
M.S: Hoy en día, ¿diríais que tener mujeres en un grupo de metal os deja en un segundo puesto respecto al resto de grupos de la escena del metal? Quiero decir, en el resto de los festivales de metal nos podemos encontrar sólo 2 ó 3 grupos con mujeres al frente. ¿Consideráis que MFVF es una buena forma, para grupos como el vuestro, de tener la oportunidad de tocar en grandes escenarios?
T: Tener mujeres en nuestra banda es, en mi opinión, una gran baza. Mariangela y Gyri (guitarra) crean cierto equilibrio, y pienso que es bueno para las dos ser “dos únicas en su especie”. Además, de hecho tenemos cuatro cantantes en el grupo (Mariangela, Kjetil, Anders y Ole), y los diferentes registros pueden ser utilizados para crear ambientes únicos y paisajes musicales, casi imposible de conseguir por un grupo formado sólo por hombres. Por ahí, hay muchas mujeres-músico que tienen éxito, sin embargo, al menos refiriéndose a cantantes. ¿Pero dónde se han ido todas las baterías?
MFVF es, sin duda, una buena manera para los grupos de exponerse ante una gran audiencia. Esa es una de las cosas más guays de los festivales en primer lugar. La gente tiene la oportunidad de comprobar y descubrir música que quizás no hubiese llegado a sus oídos en otras circunstancias. Es una situación en la que todos salimos ganando, tanto los grupos como el público.
M.S: MFVF se caracteriza principalmente por contratar grupos de diferentes países para que vayan a tocar a Bélgica, ¿cómo es la escena del metal en vuestro país? ¿Recomendaríais algunas bandas a nuestros lectores?
T: La escena del metal en Noruega es muy viva y próspera. Hay buenos grupos en la mayoría de los géneros, y nuevos grupos surgen por doquier, cada dos por tres, tanto en áreas rurales como urbanas del país. Si estás puesto/a en música con vocalistas femeninas, recomendaría un grupo llamado Gåte y, también, Madder Mortem, un infravalorado grupo de maravillosos músicos del panorama noruego.
M.S: Estaréis en la octava edición de MFVF, ¿qué grupos os gustaría ver?
T: Vi a After Forever hace cuatro años en Oslo -una gran experiencia- y, esta vez, me gustaría echar un vistazo a Floor Jansen y su grupo ReVamp. Arch Enemy siempre están increíbles, por lo que estarán en mi lista, por supuesto. Me encanta echar un vistazo a la nueva música, por lo que seguramente veré algunas de los otros grupos, también.
M.S: Con respecto a vuestra actuación, ¿qué se puede encontrar el público en el escenario?
T: Se pueden esperar a un grupo concentrado, revitalizado y enérgico, tocando nuestras canciones desde el corazón. Será nuestra actuación final de la primera etapa de la gira europea, así que puede ocurrir cualquier cosa. De verdad, estamos deseando de volver a tocar en este festival.
M.S.: Supongo que estaréis tocando canciones de vuestro último álbum “Rubicon”, ¿podríais contarnos algo sobre él?
T: Estaremos tocando, sin duda, unas cuantas canciones de nuestro nuevo álbum en vivo. Por el momento, estamos ensayando tanto nuevo como viejo material para nuestro concierto en directo. Nueve de las nuevas canciones son candidatas para el setlist.
La composición para este álbum fue un esfuerzo colectivo. Ole, Anders y Einar escribieron la mayoría de la música, mientras que Osten, Mary y yo fuimos los responsables de la mayoría de las letras. Ole y Anders cuajaron muy bien en la pre-producción/ proceso de composición del álbum, haciendo la mayor parte del material como un combo. También trabajaron como productores del álbum.
Tuvimos el privilegio esta vez, de trabajar de nuevo con Waldemar Sorychta, un increíble maestro de estudio, que nos sugirió arreglos, sacando lo mejor del potencial de cada canción. Su co-producción y aporte de mezclas fue realmente incalculable.
M.S: ¿Qué le diríais a la gente que va a asistir al festival?
T: Es una fabulosa unión de buenos grupos tocando en el mismo escenario, así que, ¿a qué esperáis? Llevad algo guay, bebed algo delicioso, echar un vistazo a nuestro nuevo álbum, y traed una sonrisa! De verdad, estamos deseando tocar para vosotros y lo daremos todo para que sea un gran espectáculo.
M.S: Después del festival, ¿cuáles son vuestros proyectos más inmediatos?
T: Regresaremos a Noruega para unos bien merecidos ganchitos noruegos y un par de días de descanso. Luego continuaremos promocionando nuestro nuevo álbum, dando más conciertos y giras, como sea posible.

M.S: As you haven’t played in Spain yet, could you introduce yourselves to our readers? Tell us something about when and how the band was formed, your present situation and work…
T: The first Tristania release came out 12 years ago. The band soon got a big and very dedicated following through quite extensive touring and further album releases. During the last three years – since the release of Illumination, the fifth album – the band has established a new line-up, still with original members Anders Høyvik Hidle and Einar Moen as the basic core. In the meantime, we have been touring Latin America and played quite a few concerts in Europe, in addition to composing and recording material for our new album, Rubicon. It has taken quite a long time, but we are very happy about the way things have turned out. We are all hungrier than ever to get out there and play, and we would really love to come and play a few gigs in Spain!
M.S: If someone wants to gather info about you, where could they listen to you or buy your albums?
T: A nice place to start is our official website, www.tristania.com. All our albums can be purchased at this location.
M.S: How could you adapted the new songs from this album to get something different to your previous albums?
T: Due to the line-up changes, and the fact that everybody was willing – and encouraged by older members – to contribute in the making of it all, we knew that the result would differ slightly from previous material. But then on the other hand, all of Tristania’s releases have had their own distinct stamp in terms of mood and atmosphere, and the new album stays true to this tradition. The biggest difference between this album and the rest, is probably that the general atmosphere is brighter, or fresher, if you like. But there’s is still a shroud of darkness and melancholy on most of the tracks. The previous releases have all been a reaction to, or a logical step to take, after the album that came before. This makes Rubicon a consequence of Illumination, in the same way that the latter was a reaction to Ashes. Nevertheless, people who are familiar with the previous albums will definitely recognize some of their familiar grand, symphonic elements.
M.S: How was the union process from Mariangela to Tristania? What qualities she has on stage?
T: After the departure of Vibeke Stene, we were obviously looking for a new singer, and Mariangela was one of many vocalists who got in touch with us. We were interested in venturing in another direction than before, at least when it comes to the female vocal expression, and certainly didn’t want a bleak copy of Vibeke. Luckily, Mariangela turned out to be exactly what we had been looking for. She totally blew us away, loving performing on stage, and also bringing a certain nerve and temperament to the band. Her voice is strong, recognizable and extremely versatile. The same can be said about her character.
M.S: How did the MFVF organization get in touch with you? Did you send them first your material? Or did they call you? I’m sure you’ll be more than proud participating in this festival which is held every year, right?
T:
It’s a great honour to play at this festival, of course! We’ve actually played there before, back in 2006, but we are more than ready to return! Booking for shows like this goes through our German management/booking company (Continental Concerts and Management).
M.S: Nowadays, would you say that having women in a metal band leaves you in a second place concerning the rest of the bands in the metal scene? I mean, in the rest of the metal festivals you can find only 2 or 3 women fronted bands. Do you consider MFVF as a good way for bands like yours to have the chance to play in big venues?
T: Having females in our band is, in my opinion, a great asset. Mariangela and Gyri (guitar) create a certain balance, and I think it’s good for both of them to be “two-of-a-kind”. Besides, we actually have four singers in the band (Mariangela, Kjetil, Anders and Ole), and the different ranges can be utilized to create unique moods and soundscapes almost impossible to achieve for a male-singers-only band. There are many successful female musicians around, though, at least when it comes to singers. But where have all the girl drummers gone?
MFVF is indeed a great way for bands to get exposure in front of a larger audience. That’s one of the cool things about festivals in the first place. People get the chance to check out and discover music they might not have been lending their ears to in other circumstances. It’s a win-win situation for both the bands and the audience.
M.S: MFVF is characterized mainly in hiring bands from so many different countries to come and play in Belgium, how’s the metal scene in your country? Would you recommend any bands for our readers?
T:
The metal scene is in Norway is very much alive and thriving. There are good bands in most genres, and new bands pop up everywhere all the time, both in the rural and the urban areas of the country. If you’re into music with female vocals, I would recommend a band called Gåte – and also Madder Mortem, a highly underrated bunch of wonderful musicians from the Norwegian countryside!
M.S: You’ll be at the eight edition of MFVF, which bands would you like to see?
T: I saw After Forever four years ago in Oslo – a cool experience – and would like to check out Floor Jansen’s ReVamp this time. Arch Enemy always kicks ass, so they will be on my list, of course. I love to check out new music, so I’ll make sure to check out some of the other bands as well.
M.S: Concerning your show, what can the audience find on stage?
T: They can expect a focused, revitalized and energetic band playing our songs from the heart. It will be the final gig on this first leg of the European tour, so anything might happen! We’re really looking forward to playing this festival again.
M.S: I guess you are playing tracks from your last album “Rubicon” at MFVF, could you tell us about it?
T: We will indeed be playing quite a few songs from our new album live. At the moment we are rehearsing both brand new and older material for our live show. Nine new ones are currently candidates for the setlist.
The songwriting for this album was a very collective effort. Ole, Anders and Einar wrote most of the music, while Østen, Mary and I were responsible for most of the lyrics. Ole and Anders gelled very well together in the pre-production/writing stages of the album, making most of the material as a combo. They also worked as producers for the album.
We had the privilege of working with Waldemar Sorychta again this time, an amazing studio wizard who had many good suggestions for arrangements, getting the best out of the potential of every song. His co-producing/mixing input was truly invaluable.
M.S: What would you say people to attend the festival?
T:
It’s a wonderful rooster of good bands playing the same stage, so what are you waiting for? Wear something nice, drink something tasty, check out our new album, and bring a grin! We are really looking forward to playing for you and will do everything to put on a great show!
M.S: After the festival, which are your more immediate projects?
T:
We will be heading back to Norway for some well deserved Norwegian cheesedoodles and a couple of days off. Then we will continue promoting the new album by playing more gigs and touring as much as possible.
